๐ Koi is one of the ornamental, domesticated varieties of the common carp. It has a great importance in Japan to the point of being considered as the national fish.
๐ฃOrigins of carps are not clear, with many different studies pointing towards Europe or Asia. Originally a source of food carps arrived in Niigata prefecture through China.
๐พ Before being consumed, farmers placed carps in rice paddies where the fish fertilized the rice plants. They started breeding ornamental koi for their colors in Niigata only in the 18th Century.
๐ธ In the 1914, after an exposition in Tokyo, Koi breeding spread exponentially worldwide. It is believed the the most expensive koi ever sold was purchased for the incredible sum of 1.8 million dollars.
๐ช Koi are known to swim against the current and overcome great obstacle. Therefore, they symbolize strength, courage, patience, and success through perseverance.
โฏ๏ธ As koi can grow very large and live a long life, they have become a symbol of prosperity and good luck. Their slow, graceful movements also symbolize peace and tranquility.
