Shigaraki is one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with a pottery tradition spanning centuries.

Known for its coarse, distinctive clay, Shigaraki ware is often used to create larger pieces. Small tea vessels like these are rarely made in the region.

In a sense, this collection is unlike typical Shigaraki ware. We specially commissioned a skilled local artisan to create each piece for KIRI.

Available in four different colors, every piece varies slightly in size, form, and surface pattern.

The Icchin technique is one of the specialties of Buzan Kiln in Arita.

Icchin is a decorative technique in which liquid clay is placed in a tube with a fine nozzle and carefully squeezed onto the surface of a vessel to create raised lines and patterns.

Even a slight change in pressure or speed can affect the thickness, height, and appearance of each line. Creating a continuous, even pattern requires the skilled hand and experience of a craftsperson.

The movement may look smooth and effortless, but there is no room for hesitation, as the work cannot easily be corrected. The delicate character of each piece is created by every precise line.

Today, fewer craftspeople practice the Icchin technique than in the past.

That is why we believe it is important to preserve not only the technique itself, but also the movement of the craftsperson’s hands and the process behind each piece.

At KIRI, located in Haneda Airport Terminal 3, we will continue to document and share the work behind Japanese craftsmanship.

GATO MIKIO products pass through the hands of many skilled craftspeople before they are complete.

This video shows one of the final stages of that process.

After the lacquer has been applied and finished, an extremely thin layer of urethane resin is sprayed onto the surface. Rather than applying a thick coating at once, multiple fine layers are built up carefully to preserve the natural texture of the lacquer.

This makes the surface more resistant to friction and helps protect the lacquer from wear, allowing each piece to be used with confidence in everyday life.

The distinctive matte finish of GATO MIKIO is also created through this important final process.

Beautiful form is only part of what defines the finished object.

Texture, durability, and the way it feels in the hand are considered until the very last stage.

KOISHIWARA WARE · FUKUOKA

A small tea vessel made in Koishiwara, Fukuoka, decorated with the traditional tobi-kanna chattering technique.

Glass is added to the center before firing. Because clay and glass shrink at different rates in the kiln, delicate cracks naturally appear across the surface.

No two pieces develop exactly the same pattern.

As it is used over time, the vessel continues to change — creating a surface that feels almost like a small gemstone.

NANAROKU Series
Kawatsura Lacquerware, Gold Powder and Raden

The wooden forms are made in Hokkaido, then finished by Kawatsura lacquerware artisans in Akita. Each piece is carefully lacquered by hand over a period of four months.

The exterior has a matte, textured finish created with kansh*tsu, a powdered dry lacquer. Durable and resistant to visible scratches, it is designed for everyday use.

The interior is available in two finishes: one featuring gold powder, and the other adorned with raden, a traditional decorative technique using pieces of natural shell.

It’s one of the questions I hear most often.

My answer is always a little different.

The drink itself doesn’t become better.

What this glass does is stay out of the way.

It removes as much of the glass as possible from the experience, so you can enjoy the drink exactly as it was meant to be.

The moment it touches your lips, you almost forget the glass is there.

That’s the idea behind USUHARI by Shotoku Glass.

Born from the glassblowing techniques originally developed for making light bulbs, each piece is crafted to be incredibly thin and remarkably consistent.

There’s nothing flashy about it.

But sometimes, the best design is the one you hardly notice.
