Saara Hopea(サーラ・ホペア)によって1956年にデザインされた『MARJA』シリーズ。
フィンランド語で『MARJA』とは『ベリー』の意で、果実のようなふっくらと丸みを帯びたフォルムのカクテルグラスです。60mlと100mlの2サイズで展開されました。

The "MARJA" series was designed by Saara Hopea in 1956. "Marja," the Finnish word for “berry,” is a cocktail glass with a softly rounded, berry-like form. The series was produced in two sizes, 60 ml and 100 ml.

Kaj Franck(カイ・フランク)によって1954年にデザインされた容量40mlの小ぶりなタンブラー。
Kaj Franckは、1953年にArabia(アラビア)からBAモデルを中心とするKILTAシリーズを発表し、基本的な幾何学形態に基づく、シンプルで普遍的なデザインを提示しました。
KILTAは発表後、好意的に受け止められ、その造形思考は同時期のNuutajärvi(ヌータヤルヴィ)でのガラスデザインにも展開されました。
ややテーパードしたシリンダー型のシンプルなフォルムのタンブラー1153もその一つ。

A small 40 ml tumbler designed by Kaj Franck in 1954.
In 1953, Kaj Franck introduced the KILTA series for Arabia, presenting a simple and universal approach to design based on basic geometric forms. KILTA was well received, and the same approach to form was also carried into his glass designs for Nuutajärvi during the same period.
Tumbler 1153, with its simple slightly tapered cylindrical form, is one such example.

Kaj Franck(カイ・フランク)によってデザインされた蓋付き容器1951。
1949年にArabia(アラビア)でデザインしたISモデルの蓋付き容器と同様のスタッキング構造を設け、素材をガラスに置き換えてリデザインしたものと推測されます。
型吹きによるシリンダー型の容器と、プレスガラスで成形された円盤型の蓋を組み合わせたプロダクト。
幅のあるリムから一段落ち込む蓋の形状は、蓋と容器を合わせた際や、別個体を重ねた際に横方向のずれを抑える機能から導き出されています。
製造期間が短く、たいへん希少なモデルです。

It is thought to be a redesign in glass of the covered IS model container he had designed for Arabia in 1949, retaining the same stackable structure.
The piece combines a mold-blown cylindrical container with a disc-shaped lid formed in pressed glass.
The lid, which steps down from the broad rim, derives its form from the need to keep the lid and container aligned and to prevent lateral shifting when multiple examples are stacked.
A rare model, produced only for a short period.

Kaj Franck(カイ・フランク)によって1956年にデザインされたプレスガラス製のタンブラー5027。
1953年、Kaj Franckはキャリアで最初のプレスガラスのプロダクトとしてタンブラー5023を発表。丈夫で安価な日常使いに適した5023は、戦後フィンランドにおける美しい日用品の理念を示すプロダクトとして好意的に受け入れられました。
こうした流れの中で、新たな住環境に対応すべく省スペースで収納できるスタッキング機能を備えたプレスガラスのモデルとしてデザインされたのが5027です。
5027には、プレスガラス機の違いにより初期モデルと後期モデルがあります。
底面が研磨仕上げのこちらは、初期モデルとなります。

In 1953, Franck introduced tumbler 5023, the first pressed-glass product of his career. Durable, affordable and suited to everyday use, 5023 was well received as a product that expressed the postwar Finnish ideal of well-designed everyday objects.
5027 was developed in this context: a pressed-glass tumbler with a stackable form, designed to save storage space and respond to changing domestic environments.
There are early and later versions of 5027, reflecting differences in the pressing machines used in production.
This example, with its polished base, belongs to the early model.

Kaj Franck(カイ・フランク)によって1956年にデザインされたプレスガラス製のタンブラー5027。
資料によると5027は、4サイズ(60ml/200ml/300ml/350ml)で展開されています。
300mlのみ資料から現物が確認できませんが、スタッキングできるフォルムや容量から、こちらが5027の300mlと推測されます。このモデルに取っ手を付けたものが1963年にデザインされたマグ5607。

タンブラー5027の300mlとそのタンブラーに蓋が付属したモデル。
どちらも個体数が少なく希少なモデルです。

Pressed-glass tumbler 5027, designed by Kaj Franck in 1956.
According to the documentation, model 5027 was made in four sizes (60 ml, 200 ml, 300 ml, and 350 ml). Although no physical example of the 300 ml size has yet been confirmed in the published material, its stackable form and capacity strongly suggest that this is the 300 ml version of 5027. The handled version of this model was later developed as mug 5607, designed in 1963.

Shown here are the 300 ml tumbler 5027 and the lidded version based on the same form.
Both are rare models, with relatively few known examples.

Kaj Franck(カイ・フランク)によってデザインされた、チーク材の蓋付きガラス容器1368。
1955年秋にガラスとチーク材を組み合わせたプロダクトとして、デザートボウル1369や、Saara Hopea(サーラ・ホペア)のボウル1367と組み合わせたオードブルトレイとともに発表されました。
資料上の製造期間は1955年から1964年ですが、製造期間に対して個体数が少なく、たいへん希少なモデルです。

In the autumn of 1955, it was introduced as part of a group of products combining glass and teak, alongside the dessert bowl 1369 and the hors d’oeuvre tray pairing Saara Hopea’s bowl 1367 with a teak tray.
Although documentary sources give its production period as 1955 to 1964, few examples are known despite this relatively long span, making it a particularly rare model.

Kaj Franckは、1953年にArabia(アラビア)やNuutajärvi(ヌータヤルヴィ)で、チーク材のパーツを取り入れたプロダクトをデザイン。
1955年には、ガラスとチーク材を組み合わせたプロダクトに改めて取り組み、その流れの中で1952年にSaara Hopeaがデザインしていたガラスボウル1367に合わせるチーク材のトレイをデザインし、同年秋にオードブルトレイとして発表されました。

In 1953, Kaj Franck designed products incorporating teak elements for Arabia and Nuutajärvi. In 1955, he returned to the combination of glass and teak, and in that context designed a teak tray to accompany Saara Hopea’s glass bowl 1367, originally created in 1952. The piece was introduced that autumn as an hors d’oeuvre tray.

Kaj Franck (カイ・フランク)は、装飾のないシンプルな幾何学フォルムを基本とする機能的なプロダクトで知られていますが、さまざまな技法を用いたユニークピースのアートグラスも数多くデザインしています。
1956年には、フォルムの単純化を続けるだけでは、さらなる芸術的な発展には至らず、用途に縛られないデザインや作品の必要性について語っています。また1958年には、『形の単純化を極限まで進めると、今度は形の豊かさを楽しみたくなる』という趣旨の発言もしており、こうした考えは、機能的なプロダクトとは異なる、より自由な造形への関心とユニークピースの制作にもつながっていきました。

こちらは、ユニークピースのゴブレット。サーモンピンクのガラスに荒々しい気泡が内包された作品。

Kaj Franck is best known for his functional products based on simple, undecorated geometric forms, yet he also designed a considerable number of unique art glass pieces employing a wide range of techniques.
In 1956, he remarked that the continued simplification of form alone would not lead to further artistic development, and spoke of the need for designs and works not bound by use. In 1958, he expressed a related idea, suggesting that once simplification had been taken to its limit, one began to long instead for the richness of form. These ideas led to an interest in freer sculptural expression, distinct from functional product design, and also informed his work in unique pieces.
This example is a unique goblet in salmon-pink glass, with bold, vigorous bubbles suspended within the form.
