旧市街の古いものを残す文化が、新市街でも同じように、古いものを残しながら新しいものを追加していく、そんな風習があるように感じられた。そんな光が台北の特徴ともいえる光ではないかと感じた。

" It seemed as if the culture of preserving old things in the Old City was followed by a similar custom in the New City, where new things are added while old things are preserved. I felt that such light was the characteristic light of Taipei."

#061 路上観察学会40周年おめでとう！

赤瀬川源平さん、藤森照信さんたちが40年前に立ち上げた路上観察学会が40周年を迎えました。それを記念して「路上、お邪魔ですか？」という展覧会が金沢21世紀美術館で開催されていました。その後に渋谷の松涛美術館でも開催されています。
私たちが36年前、1990年に「照明探偵団」を名乗る時に、既に「建築探偵」を名乗ってトマソン探しなどをしていた先輩たちですので、「照明探偵団を名乗っていいですか？」とお聞きしに行ったことを思い出します。4年後2030年に照明探偵団も40周年を迎えますので、私は盛大なイベントを企画しようと画策しています。

#061 Happy 40th Anniversary to the Observation Society of Stroll!

Founded 40 years ago by pioneers like Genpei Akasegawa and Terunobu Fujimori, the society is celebrating its 40th milestone with exhibitions in Kanazawa and Shibuya.
Thirty-six years ago in 1990, when we formed the “Lighting Detective Agency,” we went to ask these architectural detectives for their blessing. In four years (2030), the Lighting Detective Agency will also turn 40, and I’m already plotting a grand event!

今週は団員の黒部さん、柴田さんより出雲の写真をお送りします。

出雲にはたくさん闇が残されており、神迎の期間中ということもあって、その闇に神々の存在を感じた。また、出雲の街の光は間違いなく文化価値を高めることに寄与していた。これはコマーシャルではなく慣習として光への感性が人々に根付いている結果だと思う。この感性も次世代に継承していくべき出雲の貴重な文化の一つだと感じた。

The photo of this week is Izumo, Japan from Mr. Kurobe and Mr. Shibata.
"During the Kamimukae period, Izumo's darkness evoked the profound presence of the gods, while its thoughtful illumination enhanced the city's cultural value. This unique appreciation for light stems from a deeply rooted customary sensitivity rather than commercial motives. Such a precious cultural heritage deserves to be passed on to future generations."

#060 北アルプス涸沢カール

70歳から始めた年に一回のしっかり登山です。昨年は常念岳から燕岳を11時間かけて縦走して大変疲れました。今年は北アルプス涸沢カールです。上高地から登り始めて私のゆっくりした老人ペースで8時間かかり涸沢小屋に着きました。周囲の雪渓と満天の星空。大自然の空気をたっぷり吸って、やはり大自然はいいなあ！
こんな登山が何歳まで続くのでしょうかね。

#060 Karasawa Cirque, Northern Alps

I started my annual mountain climbs at age 70. After last year’s exhausting 11-hour traverse, this year I took eight hours at my own slow pace from Kamikochi to reach Karasawa Hut. Surrounded by snowfields and a starry sky, breathing in the wild air—there’s nothing better! How many more years can I keep doing this?

World Lighting Journey from the Archives、今週は2006年に撮影された台北の写真をお送りします。

台北は東に向かって街が発展している。東の方には現代的な建築が立ち並び、TAIPEI101という高さ508mで地上101階の世界一高いビルもある。しかし、一歩路地に入ると生活感の漂う古いビルが軒を連ねており、独特の雰囲気があった。そこには、活気ある人々が行き交い、どことなく懐かしさを感じさせる街でもあった。

The photo of this week is Taipei from 2006.
"Taipei’s eastern district is rapidly modernizing, dominated by the towering Taipei 101. Yet, stepping into the back alleys reveals a different world: older buildings and daily life create a unique, nostalgic atmosphere that feels both vibrant and timeless."

#059 マンダリンオリエンタルホテルのロビー

シャンデリアをデザインしませんが、光を受けて輝くオブジェはいくつかデザインしたことがあります。
このホテルのロビーのオブジェは感心しました。自重で吊られているだけですが、わずかな空調からの風に反応しています。偶然でないことを祈っています。
EVホールや中庭の照明デザインもOKです。誰がデザインしたのでしょうかね。

#059 The Lobby of Mandarin Oriental

While I don't design chandeliers, I’ve created several light-reflecting art pieces, and I was really impressed by the lobby installation here. It’s hung by its own weight, yet reacts to the faint breeze from the air conditioning. I hope that was intentional!
The lighting in the elevator lobby and courtyard is also spot on. I wonder who designed them.
