AFRITECTURALLY CURIOUS

The Komera Leadership Centre in Rwanda.

I loved how BE_Design solved a simple problem: there wasn't enough budget for both classrooms and a community hall, so they became the same space. Folding panels transform the building depending on what's needed.

The Imigongo-inspired roofline is beautiful too.

Global Glimpse — Studio Asaï, Paris
A Parisian apartment with an English soul. Studio Asaï layered tartan wallpaper, purple and green, oak and marble, alongside chairs by Ettore Sottsass, Pierre Paulin and Philippe Starck. Each room has its own mood, its own story — but colour and rhythm hold the whole thing together. Refined and a little mischievous, all at once.

Visual Comfort — Andile Dyalvane, iThongo
Eighteen seats. Each one named after a different Xhosa word. Entshonalanga. Igubu. Umalusi. Hand-coiled clay, wide terracotta bases, backrests carved with animal faces and ancestral symbols. Before iThongo travelled to galleries in Cape Town and New York, Andile Dyalvane showed it at home, arranged in a circle around a fire hearth, to his family and the community it came from.

Afritecturally Curious — Ahmed Baba Institute, Timbuktu
Long before colonial borders and modern universities, Timbuktu was one of the world's great centres of learning. The Ahmed Baba Institute was built to protect that history — thick sun-dried clay walls, open courtyards, small pathways that move like a neighbourhood. A local mason mixed traditional mud with cement to create bricks that repel water without losing the thermal mass that keeps the interior cool. The architects studied the city before they drew a single line.
