Did you know sheep could help protect grasslands, support a farmer’s family, create jobs for young people and women, and become a beautiful product in your home?

This is the story behind Njabini Wool Crafters (NWC).

In the highlands of Kinangop, sheep farming is more than just livestock keeping. For many farmers, sheep provide an important source of income. At the same time, well-managed grazing can contribute to the conservation of the grasslands that support wildlife, including the endangered Sharpe’s Longclaw.

But there was a challenge.

For years, wool has often been treated as a low-value by-product, despite being a natural, renewable and versatile fibre.

That is where Njabini Wool Crafters comes in.

Through the support from the GIZ's Agri-Business Facility for Africa (ABF),we work with sheep farmers, supporting them with trainings on sustainable grazing, better sheep management practices and purchasing their wool at a fair price. The wool then begins a new journey.

From the farmer, it comes to our cooperative where it is sorted, washed, processed and transformed into products such as woollen carpets, blankets, throws, rugs and yarn.

But the story doesn't end there.

Every product represents a chain of people and possibilities. A farmer earning from their wool, a young person gaining employment, a woman developing a skill, and a local value chain growing.

And when you choose a woolen product from NWC, you are not simply buying a carpet, blanket or yarn.

-You are supporting a local farmer.
-You are supporting local employment.
-You are supporting sustainable wool value addition.
-You are supporting a model that connects livelihoods with grassland conservation.

At NWC, we believe that conservation and livelihoods do not have to compete. They can grow together!
