A Khmer Story, Reimagined

We are incredibly proud to have been part of the Wat Khmer Kampuchea Krom Temple project in San Jose, Californiaโ€”a project that brings Khmer culture, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage to a new generation and a new place.

For AO Architects, our role was Traditional Ornamentation & Design, working alongside Cambodian artists, and master craftsmen to translate the richness of traditional Khmer architecture into the temple.

From hand-drawn ornamental designs to intricate details around the entrances, windows, doors, rooflines, and ceremonial elements, every detail was developed with respect for the traditions behind it.

What made this project especially meaningful was the connection between design, culture, and craftsmanship. We worked closely with artisans in Cambodia, helping bridge traditional Khmer craftsmanship with a contemporary architectural project in California.

It is more than just ornamentation.
It is a piece of Cambodia, carefully carried across borders.

We are grateful to have contributed to a project that celebrates where we come fromโ€”and allows Khmer architecture and craftsmanship to be experienced by communities far beyond Cambodia.

Proud to be AO Architects. Proud to be part of the Khmer story. ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ญ

โ–ช๏ธIn the context of Cambodia facing emergencies or crises, how can architecture contribute to addressing these urgent needs?

Even though the tense situation along the Cambodiaโ€“Thailand border may seem relatively calm, Rethinking the emergency shelters system for Cambodian refugees remains crucial in this context because in times of crisis, whether war, natural disasters, or various forms of social unrest, shelter or refuge is the first and foremost line of consideration for refugees at any stage before the resolution of the crisis.

With careful consideration of the design and structure of temporary shelters during such challenging circumstances, we aim to create spaces that not only protect lives, but also restore hope, provide psychological encouragement, and strengthen communities during their most vulnerable moments.

Join Us now!!!
Letโ€™s become an important part of addressing emergency crises in Cambodia together, through INNex, starting now!

Through many programs that we have organized, we have delivered a positive impact to the general public, the audience of all ages, especially the young generation in the field of design. These factors have driven INNex to become a potential event organization of the architect professional's community, focused on cultivating connections, sharing artistic knowledge, and promoting creativity, aiming to inspire and empower young designers to contribute to the progressive development of the architecture industry in Cambodia.

Congratulations to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21) on its official recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site!

This recognition is not only a milestone for Cambodia but also a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to preserve memory, foster peace, and educate future generations.

We are honoured that AO Architects had the opportunity to take part in this important journey - by winning the national competition for its future development proposal, presented during the "Second Cambodia Urban and Housing Forum".
