My first cookbook, From My Childhood Kitchen, is dedicated to my mother. It was inspired by my favorite recipes from growing up, so it’s a modern version of what she fed us and an homage to her cooking.

Inside are six chapters over 200 pages: soups, appetisers, salads, main courses, desserts, and spice mixes and sauces. Many of the recipes are freezer-friendly.

Nakhi and Bajilla Shops are usually located just outside the co-op block, sometimes tucked round the back, sometimes along the side, but it's almost always there in every coop and sometimes in Branches.

Most Kuwaiti families know exactly where theirs is located and frequent it often and especially during Ramadan.

They usually have, Nakhi (boiled chickpeas), Bajilla (Boiled broad beans), Ashe Soup, Lentil Soup, Harees and Jereesh. Some may have additional dishes such as chicken and rice or even daily specials depending on where you live.

If you ever get hungry and want a quick and cheap but satisfying meal, this is where I recommend you go to get it.

Episode 2 of my series, Questions My Husband Asks Me About Kuwait.

My husband wanted to know why there's a water cooler standing outside so many houses here.

It's a Sebeel. It isn't for the house — it's for whoever walks past. A neighbour, a worker, anyone caught out in the heat.

A lot of them are put up by a family for someone they've lost, so the giving carries on without them. If you look, the name is usually right there on a small sign.

I took all of my aunts out for our family gathering, and fed us the way you get fed in somebody's home. We had the best time.

The name itself tells you whose aunt she is. Amiti, عمتي, is your father's sister. Khalti, خالتي, is your mother's. Mine were all Amiti.
