Many people ask me why I prefer using Latin names instead of Lebanese, Arabic, English, or French common names.

The reason is simple: common names change from one country, region, or even village to another. The same name can refer to different plants, and the same plant can have dozens of different local names.

Scientific names provide a universal language that allows botanists, farmers, researchers, and plant lovers around the world to speak about the exact same species without confusion.

Papaver rhoeas, the corn poppy, is a perfect example. Across the Mediterranean, it carries numerous local names, yet its scientific identity remains the same everywhere.

Interestingly, this beautiful wildflower is also connected to traditional practices. In Morocco, its petals have been used in the preparation of Aker Fassi, a traditional natural cosmetic made from dried poppy petals and pomegranate rind. For generations, it has been used as a natural lip and cheek tint, celebrating the vibrant red color that nature provides.

Using Latin names is not about making plants sound complicated. It is about respecting their true identity and preserving botanical knowledge across cultures and generations.

We are delighted to welcome Aristolochia gigantea to our Botanical Garden collection.

Native to Brazil, this spectacular climbing vine is famous for its enormous heart shaped flowers, which can reach up to 30 cm in diameter. The flower’s intricate purple and cream patterns resemble exotic velvet, making it one of the most striking ornamental climbers in the world.

• Common names: Giant Dutchman’s Pipe, Giant Pelican Flower, Brazilian Dutchman’s Pipe

The flowers attract flies using their color and scent. Like many Aristolochia species, they temporarily trap pollinators to ensure effective pollination before releasing them.

Come discover this remarkable climber and hundreds of other fascinating plants at our Botanical Garden.

Hidden among Lebanon’s landscapes grows Acanthus syriacus, a plant that inspired some of the most beautiful architecture of the ancient world. Its majestic leaves are believed to have influenced the famous Corinthian columns of Greek and Roman temples. Beyond its beauty, it supports pollinators and has a long history in traditional herbal medicine. A true treasure of our Mediterranean heritage.

According to ancient tradition, the elegant leaves inspired the design of the Corinthian column capitals seen throughout the Roman Empire. Although the architectural inspiration is often linked to another species, Syrian acanthus shares the same characteristic leaf shape that made the plant a symbol of beauty, immortality, and artistic perfection.

English name, Syrian Bear’s Breeches
Arabic Names, شوكة الشام ,شوك الدب

Ecological Value

• A valuable nectar source for pollinators.
• Adapted to drought and Mediterranean climates.
• Helps stabilize soils on rocky slopes.
• An excellent candidate for native and water wise gardens.

Among the most beautiful wildflowers of Lebanon, the coquelicot (Papaver rhoeas), also known as the Corn Poppy, paints our fields with vibrant red every spring.

For generations, Papaver has been part of Lebanese traditions. Its delicate petals were used in herbal infusions and traditional remedies, while young leaves were sometimes gathered and cooked in rural cuisine.

The petals are edible and can be used to decorate salads, desserts, syrups, and herbal teas. Beyond their beauty, coquelicots have long been appreciated in folk medicine for their calming and soothing properties, traditionally used to promote relaxation and support restful sleep.

Today, these iconic flowers remind us of the richness of Lebanon’s natural heritage and the treasures hidden in our landscapes.
