Everyday Café & Restaurant
The Challenge was to transform & extend an existing old building with a tight urban footprint into a high-functioning café and restaurant without compromising the client’s extensive needs & the architectural language. The plot being very limited (nearly 3 perches) & narrow (less than 11 feet in width) made it extremely challenging to provide a striking view of the café while having enough space for circulation & dining.
The entrance facilitates rapid takeaway, while the mid-section of the ground floor is thoughtfully carved out for accessible, quick-turnaround seating.
A rhythmic series of curved timber members sweeps across the ceiling, acting as a "spine" that visually bridges the customer zones with the vibrant food displays. This undulating timber installation breathes life into the narrow corridor, creating the tempo of the seating and the play of light.
Transitioning to the first floor, the energy shifts. Here, the timber motif continues, but the tempo slows. Bathed in the soft glow of reflected lighting and low-slung pendant lamps, where the architecture itself invites you to linger.
The second floor transitions into a more intentional, quiet dining environment, designed to contrast with the high energy of the ground floor. On this final floor, the atmosphere shifts toward a formal dining experience where the pace slows significantly. The clear glass enclosure offers expansive evening views of the dramatic urban environment. A small outdoor seating area extends the space, providing an open-air pocket perfect for evening dining, surrounded by beautiful views.
