You have bought a property in Malta or Gozo and you know you need help. But what does working with an interior designer actually look like?

Here is how I work, step by step:

- Questionnaire, to understand how you live
- Site survey, to measure and read the space
- Layout plan and moodboard
- Technical plans and works specification
- Shopping list, showrooms and consolidated budget
- Site follow-up at the key milestones of the works
- Handover

Not every designer works with such a clear process, so ask what you will receive at each stage. Whether you live on the islands or follow your project from abroad, my logic is the same: design first, build second.

Do you actually need an interior designer for your Gozo project, whether it's a shell form conversion or a renovation?

A shell form is a blank envelope, every layout decision is structural, and this is exactly where a designer's input makes the biggest difference, catching the mistakes that don't show up until construction has already started.

Even a small renovation is harder alone than it looks. It's not the choices you like that trip people up, it's the details nobody thinks to check until the tiler has already left.

The hardest part is often not the work itself, it is coordinating the people who do it. Plumbers, electricians, tilers, carpenters, each one depends on the one before, and a single delay can push back the whole schedule. This happens whether you are managing your renovation from abroad or already living on the island.

Every project starts the same way, tape measure in hand, empty rooms, and a head full of possibilities.

This morning I was on site in Xewkija for the survey of a ground floor shell form. Taking measurements, checking ceiling heights, noting existing openings, and thinking through how the layout can work.

Everyone asks me this before we even talk about their project.

"Do I really need a designer? Or can I just manage it myself?"

Honest answer: sometimes you don't. If you're making cosmetic changes to a move-in-ready apartment, you'll be fine without me.

But if you're converting a shell form, managing a renovation from abroad, or building a short-let you want to actually book well, the real question is different.

It's not whether you can afford a designer.
It's whether you can afford to renovate without one.
