After earning a fine arts degree at Pratt and studying traditional block printing in China, John Robshaw journeyed to India to find natural indigo dye for his paintings. Instead, he fell in love with the fabric-making traditions of the local artisans. The hands-on immediacy and vitality of textiles piqued what was to become a lifelong fascination.

You can tell a lot about a place by its doors. Rachel took this photo on one of our trips to India, and it still catches my eye though I’ve seen it a hundred times.

It’s hand painted in a deep indigo floral, framed by a scalloped arch that’s classic Mughal architecture, the kind of shape you see repeated in doorways and mirrors across Rajasthan.

I love finding spaces like this, where every surface got the same amount of attention, right down to the smallest inlay.

I've always been intrigued by the geometry of Mughal gardens, the way everything lines up with this quiet, deliberate precision, and that's exactly where Layla came from. I wanted a quilt that felt tailored rather than fussy, so this season, I kept it clean and classic in Light Indigo. The cotton voile makes it wonderfully light, which is perfect for warm sleepers, though it works just as well as an extra layer if you're building out your bedding.

Before there was a brand, there was a rickshaw ride through Mumbai and an old film camera. Everything came back blurry; overlapping colors, motion, noise. That was the moment India pulled John in for good, and twenty-five years later, he’s still chasing

I love watching this part of the process almost more than anything else we do. Each block is carved by hand, then dipped and pressed onto the fabric one section at a time, so no two lengths ever come out quite the same. There’s a rhythm to it that I could watch for hours, and I still catch new details every time I visit the printers. This particular pattern is a rustic floral, and it’s what became the Anisha pillow, now in a Light Indigo that I’m especially fond of, with a Marigold colorway for anyone who wants more warmth in the room.

The Dasati print began with a single corner block, repeated four times to create a striking medallion, almost eye-like pattern. It has continued to appear throughout my designs including pillows, fabrics, wallpapers and, this season, on a new duvet set printed in white on a natural linen ground.⁠

The climbing jasmine in the palace gardens of Jaipur is what got me started on the Aerial print in the first place. I couldn't stop looking at it, so I decided to reimagine it in embroidery, chasing a little more texture and depth than the original print could give me. It's now available in a brilliant Azure, a soft Lavender, and a warm Wheat, all in a linen cotton blend that feels as good as the print looks.

I returned from Portugal and Belgium about a week ago. This afternoon, I found myself thinking about the Koninklijk Museum in Antwerp where this first photo was taken, so I thought I’d take a moment to share the details of the trip:

I started in Porto, because you should always start somewhere with tile-covered churches and a river that smells like port wine. I snuck into a thread factory that swore me to secrecy about its yellow thread sourcing, so I’ve probably already said too much.

Then it was on to Belgium, where I wandered through Ghent, Bruges, and Antwerp in whatever order got us the most pleasantly lost, which was really the whole point.

Ghent’s canals make you walk slower than you meant to, and I stumbled into a museum in Antwerp with no plan at all and walked out two hours later with strong opinions.

We had dinner at Elfde Gebod, which translates to “The 11th Commandment,” a restaurant so packed with religious statuary that you eat your fish course under the gaze of about forty saints. It was mildly blasphemous, thoroughly mischievous, and exactly my kind of place.

I slept it all off at a mansion hotel in Ghent whose name I still can’t quite spell (something like Verhaegen) full of high ceilings, creaking floors, and the specific funky charm of a building that’s seen a few more centuries than I have.

Ten out of ten. I’d happily get lost there again.
