Two years ago, I was about to graduate from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi... those were the days!

My newest painting!
In El Tajìn, Veracruz, lies the Temples of the Niches...

There's many things about this temple that are unique - one is that it has 365 niches, or windows, from which it gets it name.

In the mountains of Oaxaca lies Monte Albán. The Zapotec people created a strong civilization that shows people the strength of 500 BCE Mexico.

And now, I paint in appreciation and utter awe of their artistry.

It has been an extremely artsy summer for me!

It started off mostly with thesis writing. But now, I am getting ready for a show - AND painting a mural - at ! I am beyond excited for this opportunity and to be the first artist for this brand new coffee shop in McAllen!

There's so much work to do, but here are some behind the scenes photos into my summer so far.

I Am Mestizo / Yo Soy Mestizo
2018
Acrylic on Canvas

In 1925, Mexican presidential candidate Jose Vasconcelos wrote that "The mixture of very distant types [of races], as in the case of Spaniards and American Indians, produces questionable results."

I pondered what it meant to be mestizo in 2018. The Spaniards called mestizos people "los de color quebrado" (people of broken color).

My frustration with these derogative definitions of mestizos turned into inspiration for a painting that embraces both my home and racial mixture. Likewise, my lighter skin, alongside my Anglo last name, also made me insecure for the longest time about being confident in my ancestry. My ethnicity was regularly questioned, despite the fact that all four of my grandparents are of Mexican-origin.

Frustrated with the scripts of history and with the denial of my heritage, I flipped the script on my own.

I painted myself here, portrait-style, showing off my pride in being coronado (crowned), instead of quebrado (broken).

This one's for my home ❤️‍🔥

Centered is the Aztec Yollotl, the symbol of the heart. From the heart of the RGV comes various animals, all native to, or passerby's of, the Rio Grande Valley.

This painting shows how nature is the heart and soul of the RGV! Take a stroll at the Santa Ana Refuge and you'll be sure to spot a few of these.

South Texas is heating up! The only things that enjoy it are the plants.
