Meet Toothless — a first-time mum spotted nesting on Lang Tengah in 2025.

A turtle with a serious attitude. Honestly, we probably should’ve named her Karen instead.

The very first time she came ashore, Toothless spent a full hour conducting a thorough beach recce, clearly in search of the perfect nesting spot. After digging a nest hole for nearly 30 minutes, she decided it wasn’t good enough, abandoned it entirely, and moved look for a new spot. This happened a few times… before she eventually left. Classic.

And as if that wasn’t enough drama, while she was digging her body pit, a coconut suddenly came flying down and almost hit us. Toothless? Unbothered. Us? Questioning our life choices.

There was also one night when she took about 40 minutes just to emerge from the ocean. From a distance, she looked like a rock in the middle of the beach…except this rock was slowly… rising.

Despite all the sass, stress, and moments where we asked ourselves why did we choose this job again?, we’re incredibly grateful for Toothless. She returned to nest on our beach six times last year, trusting Lang Tengah (and us!) with her next generation.

Attitude and all, we love her.

With great sadness, the Jane Goodall Institute confirmed this morning the passing of the organization’s founder, Dr. Jane Goodall, age 91 who died peacefully in her sleep while in Los Angeles, CA for her speaking tour in the United States.

Dr. Goodall’s life and work not only made an indelible mark on our understanding of chimpanzees and other species, but also of humankind and the environments we all share. She inspired curiosity, hope and compassion in countless people around the world, and paved the way for many others — particularly young people who gave her hope for the future.

In 1960 Dr. Goodall established the longest running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe National Park, Tanzania which continues to this day. She pioneered and sustained the Jane Goodall Institute’s community-centered conservation initiatives across the chimpanzee range for over four decades. Her legacy includes the creation of JGI’s international environmental and humanitarian youth program Roots & Shoots, which is actively driving change in 75 countries and counting around the world.
