šŸŖ” From a Basket of Stitchesā€¦ to My Favourite Apron šŸŖ”

It started with 50 little stitch blocks scattered in my basket ā€” each one a practice piece, made with basic machine stitches, hand stitching, and the beautiful traditional Sarawak Simo stitches.

At first, I honestly had no idea what to do with them. Just a pile of blocks, no plan, no purpose ā€” until I sat down with my sewing friend and we started brainstorming. šŸ’”

What ifā€¦ we turn them into an apron? With pockets? āœØ

I really didnā€™t expect it to turn out this lovely. But once it all came together ā€” those geometric patterns, the mix of stitches, every block telling its own story ā€” it became something truly one-of-a-kind. Thereā€™s no other apron like this in the world. šŸ’™

And now? I wear it every single day while I sew. Itā€™s not just an apron ā€” itā€™s all my practice, all my learning, all my culture, stitched together and wrapped around me as I create. šŸ§µšŸ’›

Just spent the most peaceful afternoon learning the incredible art of traditional Sarawakian weaving under the guidance of Master Artisan, Senia Jugi . Thereā€™s something so therapeutic about working through the pattern strip by step, and I finally managed to finish this lovely handmade coaster! šŸŒæāœØ

Now itā€™s time to sit back, slow down, and enjoy a warm cup of coffee on this lazy afternoonā€”tasting even better knowing itā€™s resting on my very own creation. ā˜•

āœØ Throwback to an incredible morning of heritage and hands-on creativity! On the 28th of July 2026, I had the amazing opportunity to join the Program Pengembangan Ilmu - Ekspresi Kraf 2026: Asas Sulaman Burie at Perbadanan Kemajuan Kraftangan Malaysia Cawangan Sarawak.

This was actually my second time making Burie craft, and it was just as fun as the first! Huge thanks to our patient instructors INA Sendar Creations and Lovina ak Kejang for guiding us through the intricate art of Jahitan Burieā€”a traditional hand-sewing and embroidery craft from the Iban community in Sarawak, featuring stunning ethnic patterns made by stitching small white sea shells (tekuyung burik) onto dark fabric. Learning this traditional craft gave me a whole new level of appreciation for our local heritage.

The finished piece started out as just a small square of embellished fabric. Instead of letting it sit in a drawer, I rescued an unwanted waist apron from being tossed in the trash and upcycled it into this stylish, multi-functional sling bag! Itā€™s versatile enough for everyday casual wear and surprisingly pairs beautifully with traditional outfits too. šŸŒæšŸ‘œ

Just wrapped up our amazing Songket Document Folio bag workshop. There is something truly magical about working with traditional songket fabricā€”every geometric fold and golden thread tells a story of heritage and timeless craftsmanship.

Not only did we master this gorgeous, structured folio complete with a matching handle, but I was so inspired and made a mini songket handphone pouch too! šŸ„°šŸ“±āœØ
Huge thank you to our wonderful instructors and this lovely community of sewing friends who share the same passion for creating. Crafting with you all made these two days so special. Hereā€™s to more handmade beauty and keeping our traditions alive! šŸŖ”āœØ

From one hook to four needles! šŸ§¶āœØ

Iā€™ve been crocheting for nearly 10 years, but I recently decided to challenge myself and learn how to knit. Honestly, I wasnā€™t sure if I could handle two needlesā€”let alone four double-pointed needles at the same time!

My journey started on July 1st, and let me tell you, it was slow going. There were countless mistakes, way too much yarn-ripping, and more restarts than I care to count. At one point, I actually almost threw in the towelā€”my arms and shoulders were so stiff and sore from the completely new way I had to pull and tighten the yarn compared to my usual crochet grip.

But after a lot of trial, error, and stubbornness, I finally found my rhythm.
Meet my first-ever knitted toy: a little Siamese cat! šŸ± Not only is it my first finished knit, but it also has movable limbs, so it can sit, stand, and even strike a walking pose.

Itā€™s definitely not perfect, but itā€™s proof that stepping out of your comfort zone is worth it. So proud of this little guy and my new skills. Hereā€™s to many more projects on the needles! šŸ„‚

Another milestone reached! šŸ§µ

I just finished a 2-day workshop to make these pegged pants, and honestly, it was such an eye-opening experience. Before this, I always thought sewing was just about drawing lines and stitching fabric together. Turns out, there is so much more to itā€”I had no idea how much actual math and precision goes into the drafting process to get the fit just right!

I learned to draft the patterns from my own measurements, then moved on to cutting and assembling everything myself. Iā€™m really happy with how they turned outā€”theyā€™re super comfortable, they have pockets, and theyā€™re so easy to style with different tops.

Feeling really grateful for the guidance from my teacher. Thank you for helping me make sense of the math behind the fashion; itā€™s definitely changed the way I look at my clothes. On to the next project!

Knitting turned out to be a lot harder than I expected. šŸ§¶šŸ˜…
Spent the last day or two learning the basicsā€”knit, purl, increase, decreaseā€”and thought Iā€™d try moving on to working in the round. It was definitely tougher than it looks. I ended up having to pull the whole thing apart and start over, but after a few tries and a lot of un-winding, I think Iā€™m finally starting to get the hang of it.
Definitely realized I need this little row counter to keep track of where I am. Itā€™s a slow process, but Iā€™m enjoying it. Slowly building this little bear one stitch at a time.

Finally finished my very first pair of pants for my hubby! šŸ§µāœØ
I spent the last 5 days in a fashion workshop learning the ropes, and it was quite an experience. Going from drawing out the patterns to cutting the fabric and finally sewing it all togetherā€”it was a lot to take in, but so satisfying.
It was my first time trying so many new things, like sewing three different types of pockets (side, cargo, and back), installing a front fly zipper, and constructing the waistband properly. I definitely made a few mistakes along the way, but with a lot of patience and some unpicking, I managed to get it done.
Itā€™s not perfect, but Iā€™m really happy with how it turned outā€”and more importantly, he loves it! It feels great to see something I made from scratch being worn. Proud of this little accomplishment. šŸ˜Š

Three days of sewing, learning, and so much growth! šŸ§µāœØ

Iā€™ve just wrapped up an incredible journey at the Womenā€™s Empowerment Program Through Recycled Textile Production, and my heart is so full. It was truly a special collaboration between the Green Science & Technology Association Malaysia, WormingUp , and Jabatan Wanita dan Keluarga Sarawak (JWKS).

We dove deep into the world of upcycling, turning old jeans into stylish new bags and breathing fresh life into baju kurung to create beautiful eco-friendly carriers. Beyond just the hands-on sewing, Iā€™m so grateful to have been exposed to the world of packaging, branding, and digital marketingā€”skills that really add value and help make these upcycled pieces shine.

A massive thank you to the organizers, our patient facilitators, and all the amazing fellow participants. Learning together and sharing this space has been such a highlight. Iā€™m feeling so inspired to continue creating with a greener tomorrow in mind! šŸŒšŸ’«
