How Architects Can Design for Accessibility

Architects design for accessibility in architecture, promoting social justice and inclusivity. They create environments that enable dignity and independence, removing physical obstacles and promoting an inclusive culture. This comprehensive strategy fulfils legal obligations.
Architects play a crucial role in ensuring accessibility in architecture, collaborating with diverse communities to create functional, hospitable spaces for all individuals.
Here are some key considerations for Architects to incorporate accessibility into their designs:

1. Regulation Compliance: Learn about the construction rules and accessibility requirements in your area. Door widths, bathroom facilities, and ramps are generally outlined in detail in these specifications.
2. Universal Design Principles: Use universal design principles to make environments that people of all ages and abilities can use. This offers amenities like adjustable height counters, wide corridors, and door handles with levers.
3. Accessible Entrances: Accessible Entrances: Make sure that people using wheelchairs or walkers can enter buildings easily. This can entail removing obstacles like stairs and installing ramps or elevators.
4. Accessible Circulation channels: Plan large, unobstructed, and clear circulation channels inside structures. For the benefit of people with mobility disabilities, pay attention to the flooring texture, the location of handrails, and the slope of ramps.
5. Accessible Restrooms: Make sure there are accessible restrooms available for those with impairments. This covers wheelchair manoeuvrability space, accessible sinks, and grab rails.
6. Accessible Parking: Assign parking spots that are suitable for vehicles with ramps or lifts near building entrances. Make sure these places are marked.
7. Visual and Tactile Signage: Use tactile and Braille signage for those with vision impairments as well as clear, visible signage throughout the structure. For best visibility, use bold colours and large typography.
8. Helpful Technology: To improve accessibility for people with sensory impairments, think about implementing assistive technologies like automatic door openers or hearing loop devices.
9. Inclusive Outdoor Spaces: Create parks and other outdoor gathering places that are accessible to people with impairments. This could entail installing tactile wayfinding signs, accessible seats, and easy-to-follow walkways.
10. Engage Users: Engage Users: To understand their needs and preferences, consult advocacy groups and people with disabilities at various stages of the design process. Including a range of viewpoints guarantees that designs are inclusive.
Architects can build areas that are hospitable, practical, and open to all community members by incorporating these ideas into their work.

🌍✨HAPPY WORLD EARTH DAY!!!✨🌍

Did you know that “ARDH” is Arabic for “EARTH”? I bet you did not know that. 🥰
At Ardh Consultants, every day is Earth Day! 🌿🏙️
For us at Ardh Consultants, creating environments that not only astonish, but also promote sustainability and harmony using eco-friendly materials and, creating spaces conducive to the users of the environment is our top priority. 🌿🏙️

We are pleased to demonstrate our commitment to environmentally friendly design concepts, as people around the globe unite to commemorate Mother Earth today.

Our projects are shining examples of environmental stewardship, from using renewable materials to utilising natural light and ventilation. 🇞💧

The images above showcase some of Ardh’s Green and sustainable designs;

Our First Image is a design of the proposed Centenary Gate on Airport Road, Abuja, showcasing a vehicular pathway demarcated by greenery, with monuments to beautify the landscape made with renewable materials.

The second image is a perspective view of our proposed residential building unit in our Centenary City project in the Federal capital territory of Nigeria.
We can see that a considerable space is reserved for greenery, to buffer the noise from the Mainway and aid in cooling the environment.

The third image is of our Abdulsalam Abubakar Institute for Peace Development Studies (AAIPDS) project in Niger State. The consideration of a courtyard in the facility aids maximum airflow and maximize the space, by providing seatouts to foster social sustainability among users of the facility.

The last image of our proposed Amfani residence uses eco-friendly design such as decorated bricks to improve the aesthetics of the design.

However, we are not limited by the plan. One building at a time, we are committed to positive change in our business by pushing for green practices. 🌱💚

Celebrate World Earth Day with us by adopting sustainable architecture. Build a more promising environment.

🌍✨ Celebrating World Earth Day with Architectural Innovation! ✨🌍

MY ARDH JOURNEY.
Victor Adekunle shares with us this week, his journey at Ardh Consultants. Our team are ever ready to take on your projects. We are a call away...

"My journey with Ardh Consultants started immediately after my master's degree program as an Intern, which made it easy to adapt to their work style. From 3D modelling to drafting designs to taking site measurements, I realised the importance of these seemingly trivial tasks in architectural endeavours.

I loved the work because each day, and with each task no matter how small, was a piece of the puzzle that contributed to the larger vision. As months passed, I knew I had to remain here to keep mingling with the great minds and professionals at Ardh.

Another amazing process in Ardh Consultants is the growth pattern. I transitioned into the role of Architectural assistant not too long after and, while currently serving my motherland as a Corp member.

The reality is learning during projects, and thankfully, I had the assistance of everyone on the team. Every Project opens my eyes to self-improvement and self-development in getting better as an architect/designer and improving my design and software skills.

Being part of Ardh Consultants makes me part of a team that believes in equal collaboration, effective communication, and advanced teamwork in contributing to every project's success."

HOW DO YOU PRIORITIZE DESIGN REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLEX PROJECTS

✏️

🏗️ Prioritizing Architectural Designs for Complex Projects 🏗️

Hey Buddies! Here we are in the final week of 2024's first quarter. It seems so fast, right? Architectural designs form the blueprint for success in complex projects, but prioritising them is the key to achieving seamless ex*****on.

Today, let's discuss the vital aspect of project success: setting priorities for architectural designs for those large, intricate projects that we all enjoy taking on! Prioritizing design requirements in complex projects is something that we have all encountered difficulties with. Here's a rundown on how we can make that happen in a way that's both effective and friendly:

1️⃣ Achieve Goal Clarity: Before anything else, let's make sure our architectural plans reflect our goals. Is there a final goal? How can every component of the design assist us in achieving that? Success is set up when you realize this!

2️⃣ See the Obstacles: Sure, dangers and limitations are similar to unforeseen obstacles encountered while travelling. So do not panic! We can easily get around them if we recognize difficulties early on (think money, timeframes, and regulations).

3️⃣ Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: It takes a team to achieve the dream, therefore let's involve everyone! Including a variety of viewpoints from the team makes ensuring that everyone is on the same page and heading in the correct direction.

4️⃣ Weigh the Pros and Cons: Balance is key, so let's carefully consider the advantages, dependencies, and potential trade-offs that each design presents before moving further.

5️⃣ Return on Investment: Let's apply logic here! Our goal is to create impactful designs without being overly complicated. High impact? Check. Low complexity? Double check!

6️⃣ Be Adaptable: Why confine ourselves when the future is uncertain? Our attention should be directed toward designs that are flexible enough to change and evolve with time.

7️⃣ Experience and Growth: It's acceptable to make adjustments as you go! Let's continue to grow from our mistakes, be receptive to criticism, and improve our strategy.

8️⃣ Remain Flexible: Life is full of changes! We may remain ahead of the curve and prepare for any situation by making modifications and check-ins regularly.

So, there you have it! Let's keep these principles in mind as we dive into our next big project. Together, we've got this! 🌟 .

5 SUSTAINABLE SKILLS EVERY ARCHITECT SHOULD HAVE AND DEVELOP IN 2024
Good day Buddies. Welcome to a new week. This week, we are talking about sustainable skills architects should possess today.
Our very own Arc. Ayodeji Oladimeji has put together 5 sustainable skills every architect should have, and why.

In the never-static and ever-evolving landscape of architecture, there are some skills that any architect worth his/ her mettle should possess or cultivate to succeed in 2024.
These skills are essential for navigating the complexities of the field and staying relevant in the Industry. Highlighted below are 5 of the most important skills I think architects should focus on:
1. SUSTAINABLE DESIGN
This involves creating buildings and environments that are environmentally friendly and resource-efficient. It requires that Architects consider the impact of their designs on the environment throughout the entire lifecycle of a project.
Why?
This skill ensures architects contribute to building harmonious and inclusive environments.
2. TECHNOLOGICAL PROFICIENCY:
Architects today, need to be proficient to certain degrees in software, tools, and technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), AutoCAD, and 3D modelling tools including other Applications that aid their work.
Why?
Staying updated on the latest design software, tools, and technologies ensures better and almost seamless interdisciplinary coordination as well as making you attractive in the job market.
3. ADAPTABILITY:
Architects must learn to respond to the changing client needs, project constraints, and unexpected design challenges.
Why?
Learning to embrace change helps to develop a practical solution mentality and ultimately allows growth and innovation.

4. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:
In 2024, Architects must understand construction methods, materials, building codes, and regulations even as they evolve.
Why?
This knowledge is essential for translating design concepts into practical and safe structures.
5. COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION:
Effective communication and collaboration skills are necessary because most projects involve multiple and diverse stakeholders such as clients, contractors, engineers, and designers.
Why?
Clear communication ensures successful project outcomes and fosters productive working relationships.

By honing these skills, Architects can position themselves for success in 2024 by meeting the demands of the dynamic architectural landscape and their clients.

What other sustainable skills are necessary for Architects to possess in this era? Please drop your comments below and join the conversation.

Happy International Women's Day!.

This year's team of speaks about the importance of creating an inclusive society where women are valued, respected and encouraged to participate fully in all genres of life, contributing their own quota to a better society.

Let's come together to honour the achievements of women everywhere, to amplify their voices, and to inspire inclusion.

“Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn’t be that women are the exception.”
– Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

We join our voices to say, Women are powerful, never undermine a woman!

How can Architecture be sustainable? ✏️

Hey Buddies, Welcome to March. We are already in the last month of the first quarter of the year, 2024!

This month, let's talk about SUSTAINABILITY. Today, our focus is Sustainable Architecture.

We have a special chance as Architects to improve the environment around us. In my opinion, sustainability is more than simply a catchphrase; it's a duty we have to our environment and the next generation.

From my journey so far, these are some of my thoughts on sustainable architecture:

1. EMBRACE NATURE: There's something magical about creating spaces that easily blend with their surroundings. Every choice we make has the potential to draw us nearer to the natural world, whether it's optimizing ventilation or utilizing natural light.

2. MAKE WISE SELECTIONS: I've come to realize how important it is to choose your supplies. Everything we choose as architects helps to lessen our impact on the environment and leave a lasting legacy, like using recyclable materials.

3. DESIGN FOR THE PERSON: Sustainability is about people as well as the environment. Our work is centred on creating environments that support equality, well-being and society at large.

4. KEEP WITH THE TRENDS: As architects, we need to constantly remain informed and embrace new technologies and techniques to push the borders of what's possible in the field of sustainable architecture, which continues to grow.

5. MAKE A DIFFERENCE: In every project we handle as architects be it big or small, we can make a long-lasting difference that impacts sustainability. Be it in the preparation, strategy, scheduling, plans for water management or in conserving energy.

Together, we can motivate one another to create a more positive and more sustainable future! Feel free to drop more contributions in the comments. let's continue the dialogue...💚✨
