Chapter 8...

After thirty minutes of labor, Sefa put to bed, a bouncing baby girl. It was after she delivered that the women in her compound heard the shocking news of her husband's death. But, they were all scared of opening up for her. They thought of what will become of her if she gets to know the truth. So they all quietly left, one by one to avoid her suspicion, exception of the midwife who stayed to take care of her and her new born bab. Providing for them the necessary things she needed for her grooming.

After few hours of Sefa's delivery, she waited to see her lovely husband, whom she believed will be eager to see their new born baby, but there was no sign of him. She became worried about his whereabout. She asked the midwife if anyone had gone to the farm to inform her husband. But she tried convincing her that, "he will not be allowed to enter since she was in labor, so they allowed him to do his work, so he would return and be surprise to see his new born baby".
She was not convinced with her answer but she managed to understand. She thought of what made them to conclude, they will leave the news as a surprise for her husband." Maybe, it could be for the best". She kept thinking of how happy her husband will be seeing his flesh and blood when sleep took her off.

Immediately she slept, the midwife rushed home to do some house chores before she wakes up. Her mind was not at rest. She already felt the pains Sefa will pass through if she gets to know that her one and only husband is no more. She thought of telling her the truth, but it was best to keep it a secret. She hoped the elders will break the news to her at a time she won't be much hurt. But how long were they going to keep hiding the truth?

Later in the evening, Sefa woke up hoping her husband will be sitting beside her. But, she could not feel his presence. She stretched her hand, rolling it at the edges of the wooden bed, but she never felt anything. The only people occupying the bed was just her and her baby. She staggered out of the hut to see if he was outside, but, he was nowhere to be found. Just then, the midwife entered the compound. With the worries on Sefa's face, she knew she was to think of something to tell her before she asks of him. She stood behind her imagining what to say when she turned to her. Immediately, she asked,
"Aya, where's my husband?"

"Oooo... You mean Lancelot?
He. He.. he... Came but you were sleeping.
As you can see, he helped you to do some house chores. He even helped you to fetch a pot of water before he left to Saul's compound.
You know it's not right for a husband to sleep in the same hut with his wife who have just delivered ". The midwife stammered. Meanwhile the other women where the ones that did the house chores.

Sefa was not convinced this time with the midwife's answer. Why would her husband leave her to stay alone with her newly born baby throughout the night. Even if it was not right for them to sleep in the same hut. Why won't he use the other hut in the compound. Must it be Saul's hut?

Many questions kept running through her mind. She was not able to sleep throughout. It hurts her as her husband will abandon her in that condition. Is that how he will continue till their baby comes of age? Why would he betray the love and affection they had on each other? She felt like the undiminished love was about to diminish but she never thought of the opposite...

Chapter 7

On the first full moon of the month of September, Lancelot woke up very early in the morning and said to Sefa that, he wanted to check on their crops at the farm. But Sefa, knowing fully well that he was not fully recovered from his illness, said to him,
"You have not recovered full from this strange illness.
Why then are you insisting to go to the farm?".

"It has been four months ever since I was down with this illness.
So I want to check on our farm crops now that I'm better."

Sefa kept quiet, she thought of what to say to her husband that will at least convince him not to go to the farm until his full recovery. The fact that he wanted to go to the farm made her to have some feelings that, something bad will happen. She then come up with an idea,
"Why not wait for me to prepare breakfast so we will be going together". So she said. She thought he will agree with the decision but he insisted on going alone. After all, it was her ninth month of pregnancy. Who knows when the child will be due for delivery?

The moon was not completely vanished in the sky. Some of the villagers were still on their bed sleeping, while some women set out to the stream to fetch a pot of water before heading to the farm. Lancelot set on the path to the farm while Sefa stood speechlessly as she watched him walked away. She never knew, that will be the last conversation she will have with her husband. He left to the farm while Sefa continued with some house chores and her cooking.

Some minutes later, after Lancelot left, Sefa went out to fetch some water from the stream. Immediately she returned and set foot in her compound, her muscles contrast and she felt a strange sensations in her bones. From how her body reacted, she knew that something was wrong somewhere. But what and where exactly? She thought but there was no one to give an answer to her question.
She was still trying to figure out what might have happen when she felt some pains in her tummy like a strong menstrual pain and some back ache. She could not help but only scream. Her pot of water fell broken on the ground. The neighbors rushed to know what might had happen that made her scream that loud. When they got to her, they discovered she was in labor. One of the women rushed to the village midwife's compound to inform her about Sefa's condition while the other women took her to her hut. Immediately the midwife arrived, she ordered the other women to leave the hut, leaving she and Sefa alone.

At the farm, Lancelot walked around and was surprised to see that his crops grew rapidly. Even as he was not able to go to the farm, his wife did all that was needed for proper germination of their crops. He smiled as he walked round the farm but suddenly, his sight was not as usual. He saw double of the images at the farm. His strength started fading off, he staggered to stand erect but his feet could not allow him to do what he wanted. He fell on the ground and started screaming. A young man next to the farm heard his scream and rushed to know what was wrong, but before he could arrive, he breathe his last.

The young man became stranded. Fear gripped his body. He stood and starred at his co**se speechlessly. Without knowing how to get the co**se home alone, he rushed to call some men that were working on the other farm. When they arrived, they find it difficult to believe that he was dead. They splashed water on him to see if he could react to its coldness. But, neither the part of his body not the hair on his body reacted. One of the men placed his ear on his head, but there was still no sign of heart beat. It was hard to believe that Lancelot was no more. But who could question the will of the gods.

With the aid of their machetes, they made a wooden stretcher, placed his co**se on it and carried it on their shoulders. While on their way home, they met a woman who was rushing to inform Lancelot about his wife's labour. But the whole situation became complicated when he met the young men carrying his co**se. they believed if Sefa discovers that her husband was dead while in that condition, she may end up losing her life as well. They thought of what to be done, to avoid her suspicion and the woman came up with an idea that the co**se should be taken to Saul's compound.

Chapter 6

Life was really nice for Lancelot and his wife, especially after she conceived. Many villagers showered her with gifts. It was believed that, an unborn child was a blessing from the gods, and if anyone is opportune to gift the mother, he or she will be gifted with God fortune from the gods.

Lancelot never allowed Sefa to to do any difficult chore. He even preferred preparing meals for her. But she never tolerated the fact that her husband will be the one cooking for her, when she was still strong enough to do many tasks.

Some of the women noticed that, Lancelot goes to the stream to fetch water. They began to wonder why he would even fetch water from the stream for his wife when no man has ever done that in the village. Some wished, their husbands could give them at least half of the care Lancelot had on his wife. While those that were jealous of the whole situation, believed Sefa was using an enchantment on her husband.

Some men tried persuading him to stop pampering his wife the way he does. They assumed it to be a disgrace to men. But he loved his wife so dearly that he was ready to do anything for her without minding what people will say or who they will assume him to be.

The love never diminished. The care and affection grew deeper and deeper, but everything changed on the fifth month of Sefa's pregnancy.
**Lancelot was on the farm when he started complaining that his head hurts. Luckily for him, Sefa went to the farm with him that day. Even when he persuaded her to stay at home, she insisted on going with him. She hurried to the neighboring farms and informed some men about her husband's condition. Before she could even arrive with them, he (Lancelot) became unconscious. All he kept murmuring while rolling on the ground was,
"My head oooh... My head oooh..."**

Many native doctors were brought to prescribe some medicinal herbs that could at least make him feel better, but they all complained of the strange illness and left.

Everything seemed to be hopeless for Sefa. The whole situation became helpless. All she could do was, sit and shed tears. But the worst happened when Saul visited and started accusing her for being responsible for his Nephew's illness.
"My son has been going to the farm daily, but this has not happened to him.
Why would the strange illness befall him the day you went with him" so he said in anger.

Things became difficult for Sefa. She tried all she could to revive her husband but nothing worked. Her co-wives sometimes visited to assist her with some house chores since she was pregnant. While others visited only to mock her. They became very happy as her well cherished husband was helpless. There jealousy could not allow them to stand and watch as she had such a good man for herself.

Among the women that usually mocked her was, Caro (Elyan's daughter-in-law). All she said when she visited were,
"I know you don't like me!!!
But it seems we are the same now.
My husband died few days after you marriage and it seems your overall husband is now a living Deadman". She repeated her words continuously, but Sefa never losed hope. She believed her husband will one day regain full consciousness...

Three months later, Sefa sensed a little life returning in her husband. Unlike the previous months when he was not able to talk nor eat. But this time, he eats a little, and sometimes, call his wife to console her, giving her the hope that, he will be well soon.

The vanished joy started returning each blessed day. Sefa was a little bit relief only by talking to her husband. She believed with time, he will fully recover...

Chapter 5

"Don't you think we should tell your uncle about it before he discovers himself?"

"Tell him about what?" Lancelot asked

"About what the midwife said...
He has been acting strange this passed months.
I think he may be worried.
But if he gets to know the truth, his heart may be at ease". Sefa said hoping, Saul will be relief he gets to hear the news they were about to break to him.

"If he is too worried then, why won't he take a wife for himself?" Lancelot jokingly asked

" Just imagine how he will react if I tell him, what his son just said...

"Even the gods know you won't say such a thing" Lancelot interrupted and laughed.

They were in the middle of their dialogue when a boy ran into the compound. He kept panting when he ran to them. The two (Lancelot and Sefa) kept starring at him, giving him a moment to relax his heart.

"What's after you boy" Lancelot asked after the boy seemed to be a little bit relief.

"Your... Your uncle..." The boy said pointing to the direction he came from.

"What happened to my uncle" Lancelot asked with eagerness.

"He asked me to run nonstop to your compound and tell you that, your presence is needed in his com...

" Is that why you want to choke yourself to death?
Go and meet your mother. I will be with him shortly"

Lancelot became worried. He thought of what might have happen to his uncle that made him sent for him that hot afternoon. Without wasting much time, he went out to meet him, while Sefa went into the kitchen to prepare lunch for him before his returns.

When Lancelot got to Saul's compound, he was confuse. He thought people will be gathered waiting for him. But he was fascinated to find his uncle sitting alone on a wooden chair, and beside him was a spare chair. He (Lancelot) believed the seat was for him. He quickly went and sat beside him with ease.

Saul knew very well how to get to Lancelot. He took charge of him right from the time his parents died until he came of age. And as a result of his closeness to him, he knew what to say that will get to the bottom of his heart. He then started his conversation by telling Lancelot how he and his elder brother (Lancelot's father) had a very good relationship before his death and how he don't want anything to come in between their relationship even after his death. But Lancelot said,

"Why are you telling me this now uncle.
You told me this stories countless times.
As a matter of fact, I love you with my life.
I can do anything to make you happy.
You refused to take in a wife after my parents death because you were scared she might end up maltreating me.
No one can sacrifice that much for a child people assume not to be his.
You never maltreated me nor treated me in a way that could hurt my feelings.
I'm proud of you father... Infact, you are just as a human god to me"

Saul was touched by his nephew's words. He could feel the droplets of tears on his cheek but he managed to control himself. He then calmly said,

"I'm proud of you son. But I'm a little bit worried because, it has been more than a year since you got married to Sefa, but there's nothing to show for it. Not even a miscarriage.
Are you sure I can still exact the patience to wait until the day I hold my grandchild?"

Lancelot smiled after listening to his uncle for a while,
" You're right uncle. But the truth is, the gods are the giver of children.
You once told me not to leave this woman for few faults. Though there's nothing wrong with her character. The love I have for her over shadow everything, and it makes me not to perceive any fault from her.
But.. " Lancelot paused and starred at Saul for a while,
" She is pregnant...

"Whaat..." Saul exclaimed.
"You should have told me earlier"

"I wanted to break the news to you only if I visit and finds out that everything is ok. But I never knew, you invited me for the same reason.

Saul became very happy after he got to know the truth. They continued their conversation for a while. After which Lancelot departed to meet his lovely wife, while Saul went to Elyan's compound.

Immediately he got to Elyan's compound, his first statement was,
"How did it go...
" I'm not here to tell you how I managed to deceive him.
All I want you to know is, whatever my nephew has done to you that you are planning to destroy his marriage, I want you to end it now.
That boy is just like a son to me, and I'm willing to do anything to protect him" Saul interrupted.

" You are been deceived by his words again.
Just think of the benefit, if this plan works. You can have more than you ever had...
Since the first plan fails, I have another better plan...

"Then count me out"

There you go again...

But don't forget what will happen if the truth is been reviewed. Even your so called Lancelot will hate you for it, talk more of his disgusting wife, Sefa" Elyan threatened.

" But you were the one that deceived me" Saul said with regret.

CHAPTER 17+

Kennedy had gone from one police station to another laying the same complaint but none seems to have a clue about the whereabout of Dera.

Giving up was not an option because something kept telling him that Dera was alive and waiting for him where ever she was. He was ready to spend his savings just to find where Dera had disappeared to.

Kennedy was at home thinking of the next step to take when Tracy walked in. She sat opposite him on the cushion.

Honey...
I am sorry I never told you, I was a bad friend too to Dorathy. I encouraged her to cheat back at her husband for cheating on her.

Kennedy opened his eyes in awe.

Yes Tracy nodded her head and continued. That's why she wanted to get back to me. But I've gone back and apologized to her. I know it won't bring her husband back because the did is done. I want this family to get back stronger.

Tracy was still talking when Kennedy's phone started ringing... He was reluctant to pick up, none of the calls he's been receiving lately talked about Dera or the whereabout of Dera.

He picked up...

Hello..

Caller : Is this Dera's father?

Kennedy immediately stood up from his seat.

Yes yes he answered anxiously.

What poison did you give her ? Doctor Eunice asked Kelvin with tears in her eyes.

I don't know kelvin said shaking his head and pointing at the little bottle on the floor at the corner of the room. Doctor Eunice picked up the bottle and quickly carried Dera outside. Dermian , Peter and madam Sonia all followed Doctor Eunice leaving kelvin behind.

The police which Dermian had tipped off not minding the warnings of his wife came into the building as they were leaving. They arrested Kelvin and the guys who he was with.

The public transport was tight but no one wanted to be left behind. They all wanted to be with Dera. Dermian urged the driver to hurry up as he was ready to pay any amount needed.

Dera was still sweating after her clothes were removed inside the car. She was crying and shaking. Doctor Eunice and madam Sonia couldn't stand the pains Dera was going through. They couldn't hold back their tears as it flowed down their cheeks.

They arrived at the hospital and Doctor Eunice quickly took Dera into the emergency ward. She called for the help of other doctors. Kelvin had given Dera a deadly poison which kills in a hour. They have elapsed more than an hour and Dera was still fighting for her life.

Madam Sonia kept trying to go in but wasn't allowed. She was outside sobbing like a baby , her husband who consoled her couldn't control his tears either. They all prayed Dera is saved.

It took quite a while and doctor Eunice came out of the room wiping her tears.

Tell me she is okay doctor, Madam Sonia asked walking up to doctor Eunice immediately.

She is stable now, but needs a little time to heal ma. The poison almost damaged some organs but she will be okay if she takes the necessary drugs.

Thank God...
Thank goodness madam Sonia said holding her hands together. She she went into the room with Dermain and Peter.

There was Dera lying down innocently and sleeping. Isn't my baby girl cute madam Sonia said looking and admiring Dera.

Peter was happy Dera was safe again. He only prays the couple will forgive his wife and not send her to prison for damaging Sonia's womb.

It was night already, no one has left the hospital ever since they came in with Dera.

Dad...
Dad.... Dera called out softly..

I want to talk to my daddy Dera said as she opened her eyes. Dermain moved closer to her, I am here my child. I want to talk to me Daddy Kennedy Dera said and a tear dropped from the side of her eyes.

Dermian looked at Sonia and she nodded her head giving him a go ahead.

Dermian brought out his phone and Dera called out Kennedy's number. Dermian launched the call. It took a while then someone picked.

Kennedy: Hello
Dermian: Is this Dera's father?
Kennedy: Yes yes
Dermian: Dera wants to speak with you.
( Gives the phone to Dera)
Dera: Daddy ....
Kennedy: Yes Dera, where are you?
How are you doing?
Thank God.... Dera.... My Dera is alive..
Where are you Dera?? ( Voice filled with happiness)

( Dermian takes back the phone)

I'll like to see you here soon. I'll send you my home address so you can make it tomorrow.

The next day, Dera was free to go and she left with Dermian and Sonia.

Dermian and Sonia left Dera who was sleeping and decided to talk about those who had offended them.

What do you think we should do to my brother who is in police custody and doctor Eunice Dermian asked his wife.

Honey, Doctor Eunice damaged my womb because she was threatened. Anyone will fall for that trap, but she saved our Dera. She told us the truth and still helped us save Dera's life. I think we should have mercy on her. Your brother Kelvin was misinformed, you could see his remorse. I also think you should have mercy on him, because sending him to prison means Doctor Eunice will loose her license as a medical practitioner and will join him behind bars. The more evidence we present against Kelvin, the more it points at doctor Eunice. Besides, you can't punish your nephew and niece because of their father's sin.

The maid walked in , sorry sir. Some people are outside, they said you invited them and they are here for Dera.

That must be Kennedy Dermain said, let them in.

Kennedy came in with his wife and his two children. They had taken the first bus just to make it earlier to the place they were going to.

Kennedy walked in admiring the affluence of the entire environment especially the royalty decorated parlor. After exchanging greetings, Dermian asked them to seat down.

The maid came again, saying a couple had also come to see them. He asked to let them in. It was Doctor Eunice and her husband.

Doctor Eunice came with the 10 million that Kelvin had offered her to kill Dera. She gave the money to Dermian. He looked at her with a smile and asked her to keep the money and was forgiven already. Doctor Eunice danced around with Joy thanking the couple. She never knew wealthy people could forgive.

Dermian narrated to Kennedy briefly all that had happened and the fact that Dera was their lost daughter. Dera walked in surprised to see everyone together. Kennedy ran and hugged her. Tracy came begging Dera for forgiveness on how she treated her. The parlor was filled with emotions as madam Sonia announced to Dera that she's their daughter.

Dermian told Kennedy he will give him one of his buildings close by so he can relocate with his family. So Dera won't miss them.

Dermian asked for Kelvin to be released. Even though he acted wrongly, he was still his little brother and won't like him to spend his years behind bars. That will only bring more distance and enmity between them. Kelvin came with his family and asked for forgiveness from his brother.

A year passed by and doctor Eunice got pregnant. Peter was filled with Joy, after many years of being barren. His wife was pregnant with a child, God really showed them Mercy.

Doctor Eunice gave birth to a baby girl and named her Dera.

Three years later and Madam sonia had come as usual to the hospital to visit and pay off the debts of the poor. She walked into Doctor Eunice's office with Dera.

Dera always loved to carry doctor Eunice's daughter. So she walked up to her and lifted her up. Then she asked her jokingly as usual.

What is my name?

Your name is sister Dera..

And what is your name...

MY NAME IS DERA she said smiling sheepishly...

CHAPTER 15

After Dermian had received the call, he called Kelvin asking him where he was. Kelvin told him that he was with a client in the office and they were processing a business deal which was very crucial. Dermian called the office and it was confirmed that Kelvin was really in the office with a client.

Dermian decided he was going to uncover the truth of what was really happening. If really doctor Eunice was playing games with him, he was really going to deal with her.

Madam Sonia couldn't help it, she was ready to go to the location and was waiting for Dermian. Dermian tried to call the police, but madam Sonia begged him not to call the police. She doesn't want to loose her baby girl.

Peter hugged his wife tightly and tears rolled down both their eyes. He pray they makes it out of the mess alive. The thought of loosing his wife got him scared. Doctor Eunice told Peter who didn't want to let go that time was ticking and their chances of survival were slim. They were held in between two elephants. Kelvin who was ready to kill them and go free and Dermian who is ready to get back to them for what she did to his wife and the disappearance of his daughter.

Doctor Eunice left the house alone wiping her tears. It took about half an hour and she got to the location sent to her by Kelvin. She entered and saw the area was deserted and no one stays there.

A call came into her phone telling her she should wait while someone picks her up. It took a few minutes and two guys showed up at the spot with a car. They blind folded doctor Eunice and carried her to another location.

When they arrived, they brought her out of the car and took her inside a room. When the blind fold was removed, doctor Eunice couldn't really tell where she was. The room was well illuminated and spacious. Dera was sitting on the floor with her mouth tied and her legs tied.

Oh my poor Dera... Doctor Eunice cried out trying to run towards Dera when the guys who had brought her in held her back. She couldn't stand the sight of Dera in that state and tears rolled down her cheeks as she struggled with the guys holding her.

Kelvin walked in and saw doctor Eunice struggle as the guys held her.

Doctor...
Doctor...
Doctor...

You think you can outsmart me!? You really think you can lie to me?
I didn't lie to you... All I ever said is nothing but the truth doctor Eunice said and a slap landed on her cheeks which sent her to the floor.

You don't lie when there are proofs Kelvin said looking at Doctor Eunice who was on the floor sobbing.

But how?

How did you take her from the school?
How did you make the call through my phone to confirm I sent you to take Dera? Doctor Eunice asked still sobbing.

Like I told you earlier doctor, I am smart kelvin said with a smile and took a seat. Sonia is a benevolent woman, we all know that. But Sonia has never felt the need to adopt a child ever since she lost her womb or the said dead child. All of a sudden comes to the office with a child which she felt something peculiar for. She had the need to adopt the child so did my brother. It was a bit weird but I didn't really look into it. My brother had asked the child how old she was and she said 10. My memory started kicking immediately, everything clicked in when she told me the child came from you doctor.

A child of 10 years old, they have feelings towards the child and it came from the same doctor that was supposed to kill their baby.

Tell me doctor, who won't put the pieces together? I still needed to be sure doctor because I was sure you would deny the fact.

Right there in the office, under the nose of everyone. My brother was wearing Dera a necklace, his hands didn't go round her neck due to the position he was seated and I helped him put it on her neck taking a strap of her hair.

I paid handsomely for a DNA test to be conducted quickly. My guess was right and the results showed that Dermian is the father of Dera. And as for the school management, was quite easy though.

I knew sending a male will complicate issues, so I decided to send a female figure instead. Before she arrived at the school, she called the management saying she was doctor Eunice and will be sending a co doctor to come take Dera due to emergency.

Doctor Eunice covered her mouth with her hand. It only meant that the school management had lied. They found out they had made a mistake and they pushed the blame to her. Little wonder why she never saw any call come into her phone.

Enough of talks Kelvin said and handing a knîfe to doctor Eunice. Take this and finish what you started.

No I can't , I can't do this please, just kill me and let her go doctor Eunice said and continued crying.

Kelvin got irritated and stood up. Have it your way he said and walked towards Dera with the knife. But don't say I didn't give you the opportunity to right your wrongs.

Doctor Eunice was on the floor sobbing when Peter walked in. Kelvin was surprised seeing Peter inside the room and how he discovered where they were. He was still trying to speak when Dermian and madam Sonia walked in.

Dermian was frozen seeing Kelvin holding a knîfe to the neck of Dera who was shedding tears. Sonia couldn't control her tears but joined doctor Eunice in begging Kelvin to spare the life of her only child.

Kelvin why?
Why brother?
How can you do this to me?
I never believed you can do this...
I trusted you...

What did I really do to deserve this kelvin? Dermian asked going on his knees as tears poured down his cheeks uncontrollably.

You stay there asking me what you did?
Have you forgotten so soon?
You think I'll ever forget?

My mother...
My mother committed sûíç*dé because of you Dermian. You told dad she was cheating on him. When dad caught her through you, he sent her away.She couldn't bear the shame, she had to take her life Dermian. All because of you and you ask me why? Kelvin said with tears in his eyes.

But I never told Dad anything. I never did kelvin Dermian said with tears rolling down his cheeks.
