Screeding vs Skimming

screeding and skimming are two completely different steps when preparing a wall for painting.

Screeding is the heavy-duty work. This is where you apply a thick layer of screeding plaster to fix rough blockwork, fill deep holes, and level uneven walls. If a wall is badly built or has major defects, screeding gives it the strength, straightness, and solid base it needs. Skip this step, and no matter how many coats of paint you apply, the imperfections will still show.

Skimming, on the other hand, is the fine finishing work. You apply a thin coat of skimming plaster (POP or finishing plaster) to smooth minor flaws, remove small textures, and give the wall that clean, glass-like finish painters love. Skimming isn’t meant to fix big defects — it just perfects a wall that has already been properly prepared.
