Let's discuss simple freezing hacks for food items.
1. Before refrigerating any fresh ingredients, it is advisable to wash them first so once you remove them, you use immediately except for meat which the blood helps to retain its freshness.
Then put all green leafy vegetables in the fridge, after packaging in zip lock bags. Be sure to drain off water from it after washing.
2. Marinate all protein according to your various needs before putting in the freezer. Do allow them to thaw properly before cooking. This way, the inside of the meat gets cooked and done well.
3. Chopped Veggies like carrot, peas, sweet corn, beans, bell peppers are best used frozen.
That is, bring it out at the point of use from the freezer and return the leftover immediately. This will ensure it remains crunchy and not wilted.
4. Eggs are better stored in the refrigerator.
5. Do not store proteins above vegetables, it could contaminate it with the excess water drip especially after a power outage.
6. Green leafy vegetables are not to be stored in the freezer e.g spinach, green amaranth, water leaves, Ugu etc but you can store hard vegetable like bitterleaf in the freezer.
Also Yoghurt should not be frozen and thawed.
7. A slice of lemon and a string of mint leaf is needed in a freezer to keep off smells.
8. Constantly decongest the freezer for proper cleaning. Detergent are not to be used for the inner part of the refrigerator or freezer. It may affect its ice retention capacity. All those abandoned properties inside should be removed.
9. Dry fish, cray fish and anything fish, should either be put inside a plastic container or bag before storing in the freezer. Don't just dump it there.
10. If you stay in locations where there is less power supply, you can increase the life of your frozen items by putting big nylons filled with water to form ice blocks. This will help you to increase the number of days, it could last.
The longer you store cooked food in the freezer, the less fresh and healthy it becomes. As much as storing food is advisable, do not store cooked food for a very long period of time.
Until next time.
