One thing I want people to understand about my work is that I don't charge you because you brought the material.

You can bring me carton, plastic bottles, sachet nylon or any other waste material, but what you are paying for is the time, idea, creativity and skill I put into turning that material into something meaningful.

Also I have had people advise me several times to stop using waste materials and “upgrade” to better materials.😒
And I understand where they are coming from, bu they don't understand that this is my Signature.

This is what makes my work different.
I enjoy every bit of the process and journey. Sometimes I have an idea immediately. Sometimes I don't.
Sometimes I start a project and leave it for months because I haven't figured out what I want to use it for yet. 😂 I have plenty of unfinished projects sitting around waiting for the day inspiration will hit me.
And when that inspiration comes, I go back to them and continue.
So when you see a finished piece, please don't just look at the carton, bottle, nylon or whatever waste material I used and think, “But this is just waste.”

There is a lot that went into that piece.
The time.
The patience.
The thinking.
The experimenting.
The creativity.
The skill.
And sometimes, plenty mistakes before I finally get what I want. 😂

Secondly, very important, i don't force anybody to buy my art either.
I believe that the person who truly sees the value in what I create will appreciate it and will come for it.
I don't need to convince everyone to love my work.
If you see waste, that's okay.

I believe that when the right person sees the work, understands the story behind it, appreciates the creativity and values what went into making it, they will come for it.

Because my work is not just about making something beautiful.
It is about seeing value where others see waste.
And that will always be part of my Signature.

But if you see the possibility, creativity and story behind the waste, then you understand exactly what I am trying to do.
And that is why I will continue to use waste materials.
Because waste is not the limitation of my creativity.
It’s a gem
It is the material that inspires it.🙂🙂

Congratulations to us☺️

I’ve been wanting to share this, and I’m honestly so happy about it.

Craftopia has been selected as one of the organisations implementing the Circular Economy Youth Empowerment Initiative (CEYEI) – Waste to Wealth programme in Akwa Ibom State.

Out of the selected locations across the country, Akwa Ibom is one of them, and Craftopia is part of the team making it happen here.

And right now, I’m training 20 young people as part of this one-month training and internship programme.

When I started making things from waste, I honestly didn’t know that one day this little thing I was doing would grow to a point where I would be training young people under a national initiative like this.

This means a lot to me because this is literally what I’ve been doing for years.

Taking waste, Creating something from it, Teaching people how to do the same, And showing that waste can actually become a source of income and opportunity.

So I really want to say a BIG thank you to the Federal Ministry of Youth Development and ActionAid Nigeria for seeing the work we are doing at Craftopia and selecting us to be part of this programme.

Thank you for trusting us with these 20 young people.
We don’t take this opportunity for granted.🙏

And to my 20 trainees, welcome 🤗

I can’t wait to see what you all will create, learn and take away from this one month.

I made this a few months ago, and honestly, I wasn’t too sure what I wanted to do with it. 😂

This is actually how a lot of my creative projects start. I see a material, I have an idea, I start working on it, and then somewhere along the line, the inspiration just stops coming. So I leave it.

I have A LOT of unfinished projects sitting around. Some have been there for months, and some I have completely forgotten about until I suddenly look at them again and think.

I don’t always force myself to finish a project immediately. Sometimes I just make the base and leave it until I get the right inspiration or figure out what I can actually use it for.

For me, creativity doesn’t always happen from start to finish in one sitting. Sometimes you create first, leave it, and come back when the idea finally makes sense.

And that’s exactly what happened with this one. I made it from soaked carton months ago, without really knowing where I was going with it. I just knew I wanted to experiment and see what I could create from this material😊

Now I’m looking at it again and thinking… 🤔😂
Maybe it’s finally time to finish this project

Imagine you have a beautiful piece of art in your space and someone walks in and starts admiring it.

They are looking at it, move closer, asking questions…

And then you tell them, “Oh, this was made from plastic spoons.”

The surprise on their face is always something else.
Some will even say, “Are you serious?” Like, this thing I’m looking at is actually plastic spoon?😂

And that is one thing I really love about creating with waste.

Sometimes, you don't even know what the piece is made from until I tell you.

Then you start looking at it again.

You look closer and deeper.

You start trying to figure out how the spoons were used, how it was put together, how the whole thing came about.
And before you know it, the artwork has started a conversation.

That is the kind of art I love. Art that makes you stop, Art that makes you curious, Art that makes you ask, “How did you do this?”

And then I tell you, “From waste.” 😊

I love that moment when something people normally throw away becomes the reason someone stops and takes a second look.

Because sometimes, you don't have to preach about waste management or sustainability.

Just create something beautiful enough to make people curious about what it was made from.

And maybe, just maybe, the next time they see a plastic spoon, they won't see just a plastic spoon anymore. 😊😊

One thing I actually love about what I do is when clients come back. 🥹

Like, people that have patronized me before and they still come back again after months or even years.

I have clients that will buy something and leave it with me. They’ll come again and buy another one, leave it with me again. Before you know it, their things have piled up, then one day they’ll just come and carry everything at once.

Then there are people that bought from me maybe two years ago, three years ago, and they’re still coming back.

And recently, one of my old clients sent me a picture of something I did for her on TikTok. I think it has been like three or four years now.

She just sent me the picture like that and that was how the conversation started. 😂

Guys, when I saw the picture ehnnn…
First of all, I was looking at it like, “Wait, this is my wall?” Because it didn’t even look like my shop,

The I noticed, it was her space, She even repainted her shop and everything without taking out the flowers. If you even look closely, you’ll see paint stains on the work. CHECK OUT THE LAST SLIDE

But see the flowers?😭
Those are paper flowers o.

And funny enough, that is one thing I stopped creating because… ahhh, the work is not small, it’s not easy. 😂😭

Making those paper flowers takes time, Even to make just one rose, you’ll sit down there and be working and working. But because it is paper, some people just see it and feel like, “Ah ah, na just paper.” So they expect it to be cheap.

Meanwhile, the work inside it is another thing entirely, That was one of the reasons I stopped making them.

But this particular client ehn? 😂
I will go all out for her, She doesn’t even argue price with me. Once I tell her how much, she’ll just say, “Okay, fix it for me.” Straight to the point.

And honestly, because of her, if she calls me today and says, “Esther, I want those paper flowers again,” I will do it for her.

Because she values the work.

But guys, see this👇 after all these years, the flowers are still intact. 🥹

She still uses them when creating her content. The flowers have not fallen. The customized name is still there.

Ahhhh! 😭😂
When I saw that picture, I was so proud of myself.
Like sometimes, you make something, deliver it and move on. You don't even get to see it again or know what it looks like after years.

Then somebody just sends you a picture and you're like…

”Wait oooo, na me make this thing?”
Honestly, my head is swelling. Make I make mouth small. 😂😂😂

Because four years later and my work is still standing there, still looking beautiful and still being used?

Ah! I am proud of myself abeg. 😭❤️

And honestly, to every client that has come back to patronize me again and again, thank you.

You people may not even know how much it means to me when you come back, when you send me pictures of my work with review, recommend me or just say, “Esther, I want another one.”

It means a lot. 🥹❤️

I was going through my gallery and found this hand bangle I made from waste plastic some time ago.

And honestly, sometimes I even surprise myself with some of the things I have created. 😂

I think when you create almost every day, new ideas just keep coming. The more I create, the more my mind keeps exploring different things and asking, “What else can I make with this?”

That’s one thing I love about being creative. One idea can lead to another, and before you know it, you’re trying something you probably never even imagined yourself doing.

This was one of those experiments, and I actually love how it turned out. 😍

These bangles are beautiful costume pieces and can also be customized to your desired style, colour or design.

Who would even imagine that this was made from old disc?

This is actually one of those pieces that I don’t really enjoy the process of making, but I LOVE the result it gives. Especially when light touches it. The different colours and reflections it gives.

But the process ehn… not easy at all. 😂😭

I have to cut the disc into the sizes and shapes I want, and sometimes after doing that, the pain I get on my hands can make me abandon work for one or two days.

But somehow, I always come back again because once I start putting the pieces together and I see the it’s taking shape, thats a big encouragement for me, I’m like okayyy… it was worth it.

And that is just the beauty of creating, You just look at it and think

I don’t know how it works for other artists or creatives, but I think inspiration comes differently for everybody.

For me, it works both ways.

Sometimes, I already have something in mind. Maybe I saw something somewhere and I want to recreate it in my own way, or I just have an idea and I start working towards it.

But there are other times when I honestly have no idea what I’m creating.😊
I just feel like doing something, so I start somewhere.
I pick up the materials, put one thing together, try another thing, and just keep going. Then somehow, along the line, it starts making sense.

That was actually how this particular piece came about.
I just started.

And trust me, it wasn’t like this from the beginning though, I think I did about three or four trials and errors before I finally got to this stage.

There were times I looked at it and ask my self if it even make sense at all,😂 But I kept working on it. I kept adjusting things, trying again, taking things out, adding other things and just trusting the process.

And eventually, this happened.👇

I think that’s one thing I have learned from creating is that, sometimes, you may not see the full picture when you start, you just have to start somewhere.
And along the line, it might just start making sense. ❤️
