Specialists in 17th & 18th century Dutch Delftware Aronson Antiquairs is now in its fifth generation.

Robert Aronson runs this gallery on the Nieuwe Spiegelstraat which was founded in 1881. In the gallery you will find some of the earliest objects made by the Delft factories in the 17th century, and a superb collection of polychrome animals, figures, plaques and chargers from the 18th century.

This vibrant plaque infuses any interior with a flourish of color and historical charm. Painted with a lively chinoiserie garden, it brings together the whimsical elegance of two worlds: the imaginative East-West dialogue of chinoiserie and the graceful ornamentation of the rococo. Within this idyllic scene, the classical garden vase on its pedestal takes on new significance, anchoring the composition amid sweeping shells and a subtly asymmetrical layout: hallmarks of rococo design.

While the Rococo age often celebrated a return to pastoral leisure, its garden architecture remained strikingly formal and geometric. Grand vases, sculptural ornaments, and Arcadian structures continued to shape the landscape, offering a refined backdrop to the era’s carefree spirit. This plaque captures that interplay beautifully, transforming a moment of garden fantasy into a vivid decorative object.

A striking silhouette with a story of cultural exchange.

Dating to circa 1670, this rare blue and white double-gourd-shaped vase combines an Asian-inspired form with painted landscapes of figures among pines and rocks. The distinctive double-gourd shape was known from Asian porcelain and became part of the rich vocabulary of forms explored by Delft potters during the seventeenth century.

Fragments of a similarly decorated Delftware vase are preserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, while a porcelain example of comparable shape and decoration can be found in the Groninger Museum.

This blue and white chinoiserie plate presents an intimate yet animated garden scene, where Asian figures engage one another in conversation, their gazes locked in quiet intensity. Painted in a delicate transitional style, the central composition is framed by a wide rim alive with vignettes of figures strolling, conversing, and resting amidst lush foliage, an elegant orchestration of movement, landscape, and narrative.

Made in Delft around 1680, this plate bears the mark SVE for Samuel van Eenhoorn of the celebrated De Grieksche A (The Greek A) factory. Under the stewardship of Wouter van Eenhoorn and later his son Samuel, De Grieksche A rose to extraordinary prominence for its refined blue and white faience inspired by Chinese porcelain of the Transitional and Kangxi periods. So accomplished was their work that it was frequently described as “porcelain” itself. Samuel, admitted to the Guild of Saint Luke in 1674, played a crucial role in expanding the factory’s international reach, cultivating clients from Amsterdam to Rouen, London, and Hamburg. This plate stands as a testament to that global outlook, where Delft craftsmanship meets the European fascination with an imagined Asia.

One month from today, the Delaware Antiques Show opens its doors in Wilmington, and this year, we will be bringing a little more of Holland with us than usual.

From November 6–8, we look forward to presenting an extensive selection of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Dutch Delftware, accompanied by a special exhibition devoted to one of Delft’s most distinctive and delightful sculptural forms: The Garlanded Cow.

These colorful creatures have rather more to tell than their cheerful appearance might suggest. Their story reaches from Dutch festive traditions to the elegant eighteenth-century interior, and we look forward to sharing it in Delaware.

For now, our herd remains largely under wraps. But over the coming weeks, a few more cows may wander onto your feed…

At Museum Rotterdam, Delftware is viewed through a distinctly local lens. Rather than forming a collection in its own right, these objects were often preserved because of their connection to the city, its inhabitants and its maritime past.

A remarkable series of herring plates, for example, depicts stages associated with the herring fishery, an industry that played an important role in Rotterdam’s economic history. Another Delftware plate shows a sailmaker at work, recalling one of the many specialized crafts that supported the city’s busy port.

Even more personal is a rare barber’s bowl from circa 1690, marked for Gerrit Pietersz. Kam of the Drie Posteleyne Astonne factory. Inscribed Mijn jaer is om (“My year has ended”), it offers a fascinating glimpse into seventeenth-century daily life and the practice of entering into agreements with a barber for a fixed period.

Together, these objects show how Delftware can tell stories far beyond the place where it was made. At Museum Rotterdam, it becomes part of the biography of a city.

What can a small collector’s label reveal about the life of an object?

Affixed to a Delftware bust is a remarkable paper label depicting a gentleman examining an object through a magnifying glass. The label belonged to Ole Olsen (1863–1943), the Danish entrepreneur best known as the founder of Nordisk Film, and a passionate collector who assembled some 3,500 works of art.

Delftware held an important place within his collection. By 1924, more than forty entries in the scholarly catalogue of his holdings were devoted to Delftware, including ambitious garnitures, tulip vases, chargers and sculptural pieces.

In our October newsletter, we follow this small label back to the man behind it and explore Olsen’s remarkable approach to collecting, his appreciation of seventeenth-century Delftware, and the later journey of objects from his collection.

Monumental in scale and richly decorated, this five-piece garniture reflects the enduring taste for impressive Delftware displays well into the late eighteenth century.

Made around 1780 at De Porceleyne Lampetkan (The Porcelain Ewer) factory, each of the five covered vases stands an imposing 67 cm (26.4 in.) tall. Their octagonal bodies are divided into vertical panels, alternating Chinese-style landscapes with arrangements of stacked flowers. Floral borders, scrollwork, geometric motifs, and Chinese symbols enrich the composition, while each cover is crowned by a standing foo-dog finial.

Garnitures were traditionally made in sets of three, five, seven, or sometimes even more pieces and were prominently displayed on cupboards, mantelpieces, and other architectural furnishings. Sets of this exceptional size, however, are particularly rare. Producing such large Delftware objects presented considerable technical challenges in the kiln, increasing the risk of cracking, warping, or other firing failures.

This remarkable five-piece set demonstrates that the desire for grand and extravagant Delftware displays, already fashionable among elite patrons in the seventeenth century, continued well into the late eighteenth century.

A rare and engaging Delft blue and white commemorative plate, dated 1791, depicting an artist at his easel. The scene captures a moment of quiet concentration: the painter stands before his work, palette and brush in hand, surrounded by the tools of his craft. A draped curtain and window frame the composition, lending it a theatrical and intimate character.

Inscribed with the name Gosewijnus Dilbeek and the year 1791, the plate offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of a late 18th-century painter. While the exact reason for the date remains uncertain, it may commemorate a personal milestone, such as the artist reaching adulthood. Pieces like this are remarkable not only for their artistic charm, but also for the personal narratives they preserve within the tradition of Delftware.

What can a simple eating vessel tell us about changing dining habits?

Porringers have a long history at the European table. During the Middle Ages, diners commonly shared vessels, with early examples often made of wood. Earthenware porringers appeared by the late fourteenth century, while pewter versions became increasingly common during the fifteenth century. Their characteristic two handles made them practical to pass around the table.

Over time, the porringer evolved from a communal vessel into an individual eating utensil, yet its traditional two-handled form endured. This Delftware example, made around 1720, beautifully preserves that history. Its practical shape is complemented by a lively blue-and-white decoration: a stylized lily fills the center, surrounded by abundant floral motifs and a flowering border.

A modest object, perhaps, but one that offers a glimpse into centuries of changing customs at the dining table.
