The paper trip: the ins and outs of Blotter!

Blotter paper has been known for centuries as highly absorbent paper. It was used to absorb excess ink after writing, first with the quill and later with the fountain pen.

In the 1960s, the paper took on a completely new meaning: small, printed and perforated sheets, known as paper trips, became an iconic part of psychedelic culture.
L*D could be absorbed into the absorbent paper in liquid form, giving rise to the small stamps we know today as BlotterArt.

Amsterdam Blotter Classics were printed between 1980 and 2005 on authentic Old Dutch Blotter paper, continuing the tradition of printed and perforated blotting paper in Amsterdam.

Five Years of Amsterdam Blotter Classics!

When Amsterdam Blotter Classics started five years ago, there was still a lot of doubt and scepticism among collectors.

Thanks to the support and encouragement of Mark McCloud and Paul Guest, known as “Monkey” (1962–2021), who believed in us from the very beginning, we were welcomed into the international Blotter Art community.

Their support meant a great deal to us and helped Amsterdam Blotter Classics find its place within this unique history of art, collecting and culture.

We would like to thank all our friends, fellow collectors and artists for your trust, support and friendship over the years.

Warm greetings from Amsterdam,

Erwan & Ed

What did the summer of 2023 bring: An L*D Blotter Art Expo!
The Amsterdam L*D stamps (Blotters) traveled all over the world in the 80s and 90s.
The Sunflowers, Get-a-Fix, the Gorbachevs, and the iconic Bicycle Day 1943, along with other originals, were on display during the Blotter Art Expo, a project by collectors Erwan le Roux and Ed Visser. www.blotterart.nl

The Garden of Delight was one of my last Blotters, 1000 on a sheet, Full Color, reverse side magenta & cyan. And surprisingly, Kesey once made one too.

A few original Blotters featuring The Garden of Delights by Hieronymus Bosch, the creator of devils, are still available at www.blotterart.nl

What did the mail bring today: Two Art Deco 400 blotters by Kevin Barron, once again a special design, beautifully printed and perforated! In the Netherlands, we stuck to 500 or 1,000 blotters per sheet; that was easy for the users to count!

Sometimes a Blotter needs to mature for 40 years, like Odin, but is it Vanity or Vintage?

These Odin Blotters were already active in various cities in Europe; does that make them Vintage already?

Recently printed in 5 colors without dots, on Old Dutch blotter paper, perforated on the Heidelberg printing press.

Mark Mc Cloud's response was: Thank you kindly Erwan Le Roux for the formidable blotter you recently sent me! I will keep it forever!

The Blotter Alice in Wonderland traveled a lot, just like Blotters back in the day's who were actually dipped!
Alice has safely arrived in Amsterdam and is being welcomed with great pleasure into our Collection of Blotters!
A beautiful collaborative project by a number of Blotter artists.
Many thanks also to Bam Bam Blotter/Super Dave/Kimbal.

The Albert Hofmann bicycle ride from 1943 has often been copied; on the left the original by ABC from 1993, on the right another copy!
