Watching last week’s opening of La Scala’s new season. In other operas I loved both Netrebko and Salsi a lot but now they don’t grip me to the throat as the Macbeths should do in this opera. Quite dull according to my modeste taste. And the staging doesn’t help at all… a lot is happening on stage but running around doesn’t make an opera…
I couldn’t help to switch to a very very exciting version of the same opera after the first act… Torino 1977: no great audio and video quality but what a performance!! The incredible SYLVIA SASS is every inch the malicious Lady Macbeth.. watch her eyes.. her body language.. hear the chest voice, the drama… her Macbeth is Renato Bruson: high class Verdi singing too!!
I fear I stick to the 1977 version for the rest of the opera…
