For this unique penthouse terrace, traditional Japanese garden principles were translated into a contemporary urban setting. The entrance to the outside living space features a beautiful Kutsunugi-ishi stepping stone that is masterfully integrated into the terrace of Yellow cedar by our specialized landscapers.

The Japanese garden section next to the entrance features a modern interpretation of the traditional Tsukubai arrangement with an Oribe lantern, square Masugata water basin, and a beautiful Japanese maple in a designer pot. The location near the entrance is inspired by ancient Japanese principles as traditionally, a Tsukubai arrangement is used for purification at entrances to sacred grounds such a temples and shrines in Japan. These balanced elements feature the amazing backdrop of the Amsterdam skyline seen through the Koushi lattice work.

The Japanese garden arrangement on the opposite side features a carefully balanced formation with a mesmerizing Pinus Sylvestris Garden Bonsai by Mario Komsta in the center, accompanied by two Shikoku stones in a sea of authentic Shirakawa-suna gravel.

A very special feature of the design is the 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡, created specifically for this project by our talented Yokoso woodworkers. This bench is made without any nails or screws, relying only on a variety of traditional Japanese wood joints. Its refined proportions and natural material connect the architecture of the penthouse with the garden and provide a quiet place to sit, observe and enjoy the view.

The result is a Japanese-inspired rooftop garden where craftsmanship, simplicity and contemporary design come together in a peaceful and tranquil environment above the busy city life.

Thanks to our close relationship with our trusted partners in Japan, we recently had the rare opportunity to acquire four truly exceptional antique wooden Japanese garden shrines, known as Hokora (祠).

These remarkable pieces were created as small sacred places in which kami — the spiritual presences revered within the Shinto tradition — could be honoured. Traditionally, small shrines of this kind form a quiet connection between the spiritual world, nature and everyday life, making their presence particularly meaningful within the Japanese landscape.

Each of the four shrines is completely unique. Years of exposure to the Japanese seasons have given the wood a beautiful natural patina that simply cannot be reproduced artificially. Weathered surfaces, subtle imperfections and traditional construction details tell the story of their age and give each shrine an extraordinary sense of character and authenticity.

For collectors and enthusiasts of authentic Japanese gardens and culture, opportunities to acquire original antique pieces such as these are extremely uncommon, even for us. We have been importing authentic items from Japan for over ten years, and this is the first time we have come across authentic Hokora in such a good state.

Only four individual antique shrines are available — and no two are alike. We are therefore extremely proud to welcome these four remarkable shrines to the Yokoso Japanese Gardens collection! They are expected to arrive at our location in Boskoop before the end of the year, but if you are already interested, please let us know and be the first to admire these shrines once they arrive.

Discover our newly arrived collection of old Japanese hanging scrolls, each carrying the atmosphere, craftsmanship, and quiet beauty of Japanese culture.

Traditionally known as Kakejiku (掛け軸), these scrolls were created to be displayed in Japanese interiors and changed according to the season, occasion, or mood. The collection includes hand-painted landscapes, calligraphy, floral compositions, animals, and symbolic subjects, all presented in their original or traditionally mounted form.

Whether displayed in a Tokonoma, a contemporary interior, a meditation space, or a private collection, an authentic Japanese scroll brings refinement, serenity, and a distinctive sense of place.

Our team of talented woodworkers have just started on a very special new project!
