2025 . Solid Oak . Kitchen

Like in most of my work, a lot of effort and hours hide themselves in the end result. I think this Solid Oak Kitchen has above average lived up to this. My clients trusted me with a free hand in the design of their kitchen and together we found a timeless form language that suited their daily life and house very well.

For this project I couldn’t work with conventional materials and I needed to be sure there were no adhesives in the materials. To be able to control the whole process I needed to build up the whole kitchen from scratch. This meant 3 months of classic woodworking two cubic meters of A-class European Oak into 1500 beams for every panel, door, shelf, grip and so on…

Though this demanded consistency and focus, working with the best quality materials for lovely clients that give me time on hand, made it worth every minute of it. 🍀

2026 . New Project . 🏔️🏡 🌲

For a new, special and also personal project I ordered almost a whole Larch tree 🌲 to work with. As the project will be part of an old summer farmhouse in the Swiss 🇨🇭 mountains I wanted the wood to be from the alpine region. I ordered 3 meter lengths but the somehow there was a slight mix up and the 6 meter lengths 6,5 cm thickness where a little overwhelming.. but a nice challenge to take on and noting we cant handle 💪🏼.

The slow growing in the cold mountain area made it a true beauty and gave the tree its A class quality. It will be a true joy to work with 🍀🪚.

I will document the process from tree to final so more updates will follow soon!

2025 . Craft . Silk Kimono

Today I had quite humbling experience when I visited the Oshima Tsumugi Silk village in Amami, Japan. It’s a bit hidden in the hills close to the Pacific Ocean 🌊.

As practising a craft myself you often can relate other crafts, understanding processes and so to say you can “read” and value what you see in how things are made. But today was different.. seeing the craftswomen and men working on the silk fabric to make kimonos is so complex and precise it’s even hard to grasp while looking at it live.

The proces of these fabrics start with the preparation, the silk is carefully prepared with starch from seaweed and dried for 10 days outside and 10 days inside where humidity / sunlight / airflow are all factors that need to be monitored by human sense that demands years of experience.

Next the weaving pattern is being prepared and calculated and then…

The threads are then dyed into a pre calculated pattern… by hand

So the threads holds a sort of patterncode from which the end pattern then is being weaved in two directions…

The end results are beautiful and refined but to see the pride in their work and the valuable material and skills they develop for me is true magic. 💫

2025 . Wooden Temple . Nara

Even the best craftsman misses the nail once in a while…

Today I was in Nara, Japan saw this overwhelming wooden temple. An amazing construction that stood for almost a 1000 years. The Todai-ji temple was built to house the biggest Buddha statue (16 meters high) in the middle of the now kown Nara park.
There construction itself is made of wood, measures 48 meters high and 55 meters wide. It’s been repaired from fires twice and is now open to the public.

The scale is immense and to see this up close is a great inspiration of what was already possible then in the material that I love the most. The details even on this scale are impressive let alone the size of the beams and the amount of trees needed.

It’s also reassuring to see that even the best craftsman missed the nail once in while 😉.

Paying taxes with your skills…

At the moment I’m travelling through Japan and came back to Takayama in the Hida mountain region, famous for its woodcraft. I was here 13 years ago and already impressed by the skills of the craftsmen here, they were the designers of their time shaping buildings and everyday objects in practical use, exploring their skills.

Today I learned that the craftsmen could use their skills to pay taxes to the government as their skills were so valuable. They would go to the capital and do repairs on government buildings instead of paying money and only needed to work 50 days to earn enough for a whole year… imagine that..

All over town you see how the people here lived and worked with wood, traces of time and wear are visible which is considered an asset instead of weakness. For me it’s a great inspiration and gift to be able to see endless skills in such inspiring and beautiful surroundings🍁🍂 🍀

2025 . People . “Work”

Last week I opened up my Studio & Workshop during the Dutch Design Week at Sectie-C.

A lot of people visited and also bought some works during the week. I like to collect the stories behind the item bought, is it a gift or just a piece for themselves? I took out these two

A couple bought the biggest Walnut box I made so far and told me it was the graduation gift for their daughter.

The smallest I made was for a woman from New York who will use it to store the ring for her boyfriend when she proposes in the upcoming days.

Its an honor that people choose something from my hand or feel the urge to tell you that they like your work or sometimes mumble something nice and small on the way out.

The last nine days have been a great opportunity to meet new people, catch up and share work with people who took the time to visit me.

A big thanks to all who visited and shared their kind words! 🍀
