THE MYSTERY OF ST. ANDREW: Did we discover a Romanesque masterpiece? 🔎

As antique dealers, we all dream of that one unique find. Last week, we acquired this hand-carved oak statue of Saint Andrew holding his iconic X-shaped cross. Initially, it looked like a charming piece of 17th-century folk art. But a closer look revealed a completely different story...

This sculpture features undeniable hallmarks of early medieval Romanesque art (11th-13th century):
• The strict frontal, static posture and elongated almond-shaped eyes.
• Carved from a single, solid oak log (not hollowed out), showing deep natural aging splits.
• Fascinating toolmarks, including a medieval transfer grid still partly visible on top of the head!
• Remnants of original pink/red and yellow pigments on the base.

The big question: Is this a genuine 12th-century treasure, or an incredibly well-made 19th-century Neo-Romanesque revival piece carved on old oak? We are currently considering a scientific tree-ring analysis (dendrochronology) to find out for sure!

Today we are thrilled to introduce a breathtaking piece of history to our collection! This monumental antique Chinese Imari punch bowl is an absolute showstopper, boasting a grand diameter of 26 cm and a substantial weight of 1.6 kg. 🏺

While the vibrant color palette instantly brings traditional Japanese Arita porcelain to mind, this masterpiece was actually handcrafted in the famous kilns of Jingdezhen, China, during the late Qing Dynasty. Around 1880, the European demand for the iconic Imari style was so immense that Chinese master artisans perfected the craft for the international luxury export market.
