What fascinates me about weaving is how something complex can emerge from relatively simple elements — just threads, colours and a structure. I have been fascinated by this kind of process since childhood, watching complex forms emerge in plants and throughout nature. Years later, I found the same fascination in weaving.
For many years, I worked in a completely different field. A few years ago, I decided to make weaving my full-time occupation and give it all the time and attention I have available. It is now the main thing I do — from designing and preparing the warp to weaving and finishing each piece by hand.
I’m particularly interested in complex structures and the way they change the character of a fabric.
My favourite technique is Deflected Double Weave — a three-dimensional structure that allows me to create fabrics with depth and movement and play with its two layers to discover what happens when they interact.
I mostly make handwoven scarves, shawls and home textiles, working mainly with tweed merino wool.
