The variety that helps minimize risks across the entire production cycle

Dordogne seemed to have it all. High yield, great taste, attractive appearance, and strong resistance to bolting and Orobanche (broomrape); a parasitic plant that can severely impact carrot crops in the Mediterranean region. Yet one limiting factor remained: seed availability. Seed production was challenging, often limiting our ability to meet your full demand. That has now changed.

Dorlago, the direct successor to Dordogne, has all the traits you’ve come to expect from us. In addition, it features parental lines with significantly improved seed set, ensuring more reliable availability for growers. But on top of that, Dorlago brings the additional strength of better resistance to root breaking during harvest and post-harvest handling.

All in all, Dorlago builds on the strengths of Dordogne while solving its limitation through improved producibility. The result is a dependable and well-rounded variety that supports consistent, high-quality carrot production.

How do we turn global expertise into reliable local seed supply - year after year?
That was the central question our Vice President Operations, Frank Claessens, addressed during a Channel World Seed panel at the ISF World Seed Congress in Lisbon.

From a BASF | Nunhems perspective, one message came through clearly:
Seed production has always been global and decentralized - but the level of risk we manage today is fundamentally different.

Climate volatility, regulatory pressure and geopolitics are no longer exceptions. They directly impact our ability to deliver reliable seed supply every season. They are just part of the reality we operate in.
This requires us to rethink how we design our production networks - less optimized for cost alone, more resilient by design.

A few key takeaways from the discussion:
• Global footprint remains essential
• The balance is getting more complex
• Resilience depends on strong ecosystems
• Shared standards enable local flexibility

Looking ahead, the discussion reinforced a clear direction. The future belongs to seed systems that are not only efficient in good years, but reliable in difficult ones.

No type of resistance lasts forever. RNA Viruses like ToBRFV continuously try to adapt by mutating and generating new strains and variants. An effective way to create a strong defense against dynamic threats like these is Gene Stacking. By stacking multiple genes in new varieties, we add multiple distinct layers of defense. Most commercial varieties nowadays rely on one or two genes. The current key innovation is stacking three genes in one single variety. And that is what we are working on at BASF | Nunhems.

CYSDV can be a season-defining disease, turning fields yellow and pushing risk levels to the limit.
That’s why we listened closely to growers asking for CYSDV resistance - and our breeders delivered: a development journey that brought a clear, tangible outcome in the field: green again instead of yellow.
And because melon types aren’t the same, the resistance strategy isn’t either. CYSDV resistance sources that work for cantaloupe don’t automatically translate to honey dew. Therefore, we developed a dedicated solution, including intermediate resistance (IR) for honey dew, which will be the first in this segment.
While resistance is powerful, it’s not everything. Integrated measures like whitefly control, sanitation, and strong crop care remain essential to keep plants healthy and help protect the durability of the trait.
We’re proud when partnerships make the impact real - like our work with Bart Fisher (Fisher Ranch), who wanted CYSDV resistant varieties, trialled together with us, and is now producing in the area again. Thank you very much for your trust!
