Are you looking for a new favourite teacup, or perhaps a colourful detail to add to your decor?

These lovely Japanese porcelain teacups belong to a set of Kachō Jūnikagetsu; Flowers and Birds of the Twelve Months. The colours and motifs swept me away at first sight, vibrant yet with dignified images that don’t demand attention in a manner that takes away from the peaceful feeling associated with the calm of a fresh cup of tea. The porcelain is of magnificent quality and feels good to the touch, the sober white adding great contrast to the colours.

This set is normally made up of 12 cups, one to represent each month. Alas, we only have 11, but to follow in the footsteps of the long-lost 12th addition, we decided to sell these cups separately. This gives people the opportunity to pick their favourite without feeling like they are performing the unholy act of breaking up a set, as it seems the spirits of these cups want to go their separate ways! I definitely have my own favourites, but perhaps a certain bird or plant speaks to you.

Which one is your favourite?

Vermoedelijk gemaakt in Japan rond 1900.

So happy to have added this stunning set to our collection! Perfect detail and beautiful colour.

Familiar Wild Birds is a lovely luxurious set of books, written by British ornithologist W. Swaysland and brought to life with illustrations by Archibald Thorburn. These volumes are written to raise awareness about wild birds inhabiting Britain, and the author speaks with great care and grace of these beautiful creatures, not only in scientific and direct terms. Take the Raven, for example, where he speaks of the dark myths surrounding these birds and the way they have been written about in modern literature like Edgar Allan Poe’s work. Most of the writing, of course, focuses on the bird’s behaviour, ways to spot them in the wild, and includes illustrations of the eggs so you can recognise them in their nests. Many of the illustrations are rich in colour, life-like in presentation, and on their own already worth admiring. Add to that the interesting and informative writing and you can conclude that these books will make a lovely addition to a collection of antique books, especially one themed around animals.
