Our Idea: Transforming Textile Waste Through Innovation

Our project focuses on converting MYB Textiles’ cotton clips into a natural flock fibre. This closed-loop, cellulose-based material can be used in its raw form or processed for electrostatic textile flocking, which creates a soft, short velvet pile on fabric or paper.

To showcase this textural material, we have developed a prototype collection flock printed on MYB’s heritage lace. This process adds colour and texture, creating contemporary textiles that merge traditional manufacture with hand-craft and embody circular design.

What a weekend,
Sara & Sarah and Annika of where running a cotton flocking workshop at

The flock fibre was made entirely from waste cotton clips, and participants worked on handmade paper from
foundation — created using the same cotton waste from ’s Madras manufacture.

From screen-printing imagery inspired by MYB’s lace archive to designing stencils and hand-painting, everyone left with a unique flocked artwork — all made from lace cotton waste!

Last two days!

If you believe in changing the landscape for sustainable manufacture and design, we’d love your help to turn this idea into a working, scalable reality.

This project is all about turning heritage lace mill MYB’s waste cotton clips into a textile flocking fibre and flocked lace fabrics - we need your help to take it to the next level.

If you're passionate about:
•Sustainable textile design
•Heritage textile manufacturing
•Practical solutions to textile waste (which is a beautiful material resource)

Then please consider supporting or sharing. We can’t move this forward without your backing.

Creative Scotland is still matching every donation closing 26th of June — so your support goes twice as far.

Your support will help us in the short term to:
•Scale up processing of cotton clips into flock
•Partner with complementary industries
•Develop a flocked lace textile collection
•And showcase the project

Longer term your support will give us the confidence to:
•Go for further funding;
•Offer further natural fibre flock alternatives
•Explore re-spinning the natural fibres
•And develop other exciting opportunities..

Flocc is a collaborative partnership between Sara + Sarah Smart Textile Design (Scottish Borders), MYB Textiles (Ayrshire, Scotland), and Annika Syrjamäki of maison du flock (The Hague, Netherlands). Together, we’re transforming MYB’s unique textile waste—madras cotton clips—into a natural flock fibre, a sustainable cellulose-based material that can be used for paper-making or electrostatic textile flocking, creating a soft, velvety surface on fabric or paper.

🌱 We need your help! 🌱

To save more valuable fibre from landfill and scale up this innovation, we’re launching a crowdfunding campaign—and we’d love for you to be part of it!

Rewards will include:

💫 A special MYB mill tour and see the results of the flock project;

💫 An inspiring dive into the MYB lace archive, and design your lace pattern;

💫 A hands-on cotton flocking workshop with Annika in The Hague;

💫 The first opportunity to buy our cotton flock fibre.

By supporting this campaign, you’ll help fund material processing, essential testing, and research, making it possible for us to showcase our work at Milan Design Week and Proposte—taking this closed-loop innovation to a global stage!

For the past 14 years, I’ve learned, developed, experimented, and taught

Without this place in The Hague, making work will be quit a problem. For me, it’s essential to have a workshop in The Hague, not only for printing there, but every sample I make begins there by preparing my screens. Equipment I can’t have in my own studio.
For me personally, this will effect my work as a textile designer/ artist .
Next to being the coordinator of the workshop at the moment and caring about all artists, designers, beginning printmakers, schools and amateur printers growing, experimenting and developing skills.

Growing up close to nature in Sweden has made Annika appreciate its peace and beauty, in addition to the hustle and bustle of the city.
She misses the magical feeling of nature’s silence and strives to create a 3D forest experience.
Annika wants to capture the essence of a forest in a tactile space, drawing inspiration from the forests and light and shadow play of the trees.
Her goal is to provide a graphic representation of the soothing experience of being in nature, inspired by the graphic forest environments of video games.
It can be seen as a dystopian future image where nature can only be experienced in museums, and ai generates the image. Forest sketch 1
