✨ It’s a grotesque (and not a gargoyle)!

Grotesques and gargoyles are another subject which I have a million photos of on my phone.

Grotesques are stone carvings placed high on cathedral walls, where they have watched for centuries. It’s rare to see them up close.

When I visited York last year, I found this one in the stonemason’s yard beside York Minster.

📷 photo was taken by me in York, 21 March 2025.

The grotesque I photographed is newly carved, created to replace one long lost to centuries of wind and rain. Even with careful study, much of the original design had disappeared, leaving the modern stonemason to interpret what once was.

It is carved from limestone, by hand, using traditional tools.

Grotesques appear alongside gargoyles, high on the building, but unlike gargoyles they serve no practical purpose. They are decorative, often humorous, and full of symbolism. Many take hybrid forms: part human, part animal, part imagination. They are shaped as much by folklore as by faith.

This particular carving is intended to symbolise the tension between good and evil. The frog emerging from the mouth draws on medieval symbolism, where the frog represents demons. Other elements, like the fish, suggest ideas of faith and redemption.

❓Did you know? A grotesque is purely decorative, while a gargoyle serves as a rain spout!

✨ My quick guide to using long and short stitch!

This stitch is perfect for curves and straight lines alike, and especially useful for filling medium to larger areas with smooth, blended and flowing stitches.
In these examples—beetles, spiders, crescent moons, and swords—you can see how it can be used for both flowing shapes and more structured forms.

🪾On a walk in the forest, I came across Medusa.

I wish I had more time to wander amongst the trees. On a walk in February I came across Medusa, a beautiful wood carving. It was carved into a storm damaged fallen tree.

Where can you find this wood carving?

✨it’s true!

As a one person business, I find it difficult to add social media to my list of things to do. I know it’s a huge part of running a business, but keeping up with it alongside everything else is a bit of a juggling act.

I love taking photos and videos, but turning them into actual posts somehow eludes me! I’ve managed two reels in 6 weeks 🤣 which I’m counting as a success.

I get lost in stitching the embroidery and often forget to film any of it. I take plenty of photos for instructions…and that’s about as far as it goes.

By the time I remember that people quite like “before and after” transformations, I’ve already tidied up my work table and any evidence of a mess has vanished.

The same goes for mistakes. I fix them and move on and forget that showing how I fixed it might be helpful for someone else!

Meanwhile I’m regularly offered ‘helpful’ services that promise to solve all my social media problems for €39.99 a month 🤣

Its tempting!

So, maybe I’m going to think about social media a little bit differently.

The embroidery kits I design, the subjects I choose, and the other small businesses I buy from to complement my own products really are a reflection of my own interests, the things I genuinely love in life.

I’ve made an embroidery kit featuring a Gothic arch, which probably explains why my phone is crammed with photos of Gothic arches in churches and other buildings I’ve visited. I love fairytales and witches, dark forests, vampires and haunted graveyards...

You can see all of this in the embroidery kit designs and the candles and felt characters I choose to sell.

So maybe for now I’ll share photos and snippets of the things that inspire it all.

I’m hoping you’ll still tag along, that we share some of the same interests, and that you’ll enjoy the reels when I remember to make them.

Does anyone else feel like this?

☕️ Too late for coffee…too early for bed?
The obvious solution: light a candle 🕯️

If you’re looking for the perfect candle for this time of year, try Hecate.

White thyme • pepper • ripe Grecian fruits. A light floral-herbal scent with a touch of the sun-warmed earth.

However you unwind in the evening, a candle is always a welcome addition!

Hecate is available in my web shop.

What’s your late-evening ritual?

📷 videos & photos are all by me. The first clip was taken at sunset in Norway.
