Independent design studio founded by Rick Tegelaar focussing on new exciting possibilities for existing materials.

Rick Tegelaar (Rotterdam, 1986) graduated with honours from the ArtEZ Arnhem product design department in 2011. Since then he works independently from his studio and workshop in Arnhem. Rick Tegelaar likes to work with undervalued materials such as wire mesh and waste wood. By re-examining these materials, new applications of the materials arise. The challenge lies in finding new forms, qualities and aesthetics as opposed to those with which we are all too familiar. Looking at the products and materials we are surrounded with in an un-biased way, creates research into new possibilities of known materials and processes. Rick often develops new machines, tools and techniques for each new project to be able to retrieve new properties from a given material. Working with a material in different ways, using different methods, will automatically create a new aesthetic as well. Aesthetics are often wrongly neglected within industrial processes. In his work, Rick tries to show in what way a new aesthetic can be achieved in industrial materials by making small changes in the methods of production.

They say many hands make light work, and looking back at these memories from Milan Design Week, it’s clear just how true that is.

When you see the finished show, with everything set up, polished and perfectly in place, it’s easy to forget the chaos, hard work and fun that went into creating it. Over the course of two days, together with and my fantastic team, we transformed .space into Oasis.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped us bring it to life.

Talk Shop: A design talk with Rick Tegelaar, and , moderated by .

A design talk exploring the value of the handmade, the role of manual processes, and the enduring connection between hand and mind. Organised by Rick Tegelaar as part of his solo exhibition Oasis during Milan Design Week, the conversation reflects a practice rooted in making. Moderated by Laura May Todd, the talk brings together Luca Nichetto and Hagit Pincovici to consider the place of craftsmanship in an age increasingly shaped by AI.
