During the weekend I have been mending this knitted jacket, that used to belong to my father. It's probably knitted by my grandmother and is about 50 years old.
I chose a pink yarn to make the jacket more festive. Both holes on the elbows were darned using duplicate stitch. For the cuffs I used blanket stitches.
I was planning to save this one for but it was to tempting 🪡🧵 but luckily someone came with two jackets in need of a little tlc today.

Enjoying some spring weather, hopefully it will last. As I'm not a winter loving person 🤣you might clame I live in the wrong environment, but I do enjoy the rest of the year and the nature. Debbie from is definitely in the right environment when it comes to mending and restoring vintage clothing.
It's a honour introducing Debbie and her fabulous work this Friday 🪡🧵

Mending began in my teens, mostly second hand items which I would repair or customise. I later took classes in tailoring which led to a career as a costumier by 2002 where I dressed entertainers using vintage and recovered fabrics. Specialising in clothing restoration and refashioning, my business grew and I was exhibiting at large shows when in 2013 a cancer diagnosis meant I had to stop for several months.
This became a catylist for me to make changes, working in the fashion industry felt superficial as throw away culture grew. By 2015 my business was zero waste where every part of each garment was reused in some way.
I continue to restore vintage clothing which means mending is an integral part of my job. I only upcycle where a garment is beyond repair, the fact many have survived over seventy years means they deserve a second chance.
The biggest challenges are stains which can be so random. I work daily with tears, cigarette burns, moth holes, broken zippers and mould damage but a red wine spillage can cause problems!
A couple of years ago I set up The Mending Circle, a community group where we meet to mend, encouraging others to extend the life of their clothing. I think the most valuable mending tip is to pass on what you learn, more menders means more clothing saved.
As we battle the environmental crisis that fast fashion brings, my weapon of choice would be a needle and thread!

So happy to introduce you to Jade .rose.clothes hope you all enjoy though I'm very late to post this Friday.

Enjoy your weekend 🧵🪡

My work has evolved from a passion for mending, experimenting and combining textile techniques with up-cycling to create limited edition, unique clothes, and accessories. I enjoy taking a discarded or unloved piece of clothing and either mending or transforming it into something new and unique.
Unfortunately, over the years, I have seen a growth in the over-consumerism of the textiles industry and chosen to work against this trend, especially as I am a mother of 4!
Textiles is in my blood, and I have gained much of my skills from a group of influential women in my life, who have handed down not only their skills and knowledge to me. I remember as a tiny girl watching my Nan make brides’ dresses in her spare room and teaching me to sew on an industrial machine. I spent hours with my mum knitting and admiring different types of wool and the manipulation of their texture. I have also been influenced by my aunt’s love for embroidery and patchwork and even my surrogate Nan has helped me to decipher many crochet patterns!
I love visible mending, especially working on a loom, I feel it shows the journey of a piece of clothing and the love someone has regardless of the monetary value, but the connection to a piece. I use only reclaimed yarn for mending and all my knit/crochet wear and upcycled denim is made from reclaimed materials
My bags are made from plarn (plastic yarn) or discarded clothing that I make by cutting into continuous strips, which are then be either knitted or crocheted to form a strong and versatile bag.
I incorporate the same technique when making jewellery but predominantly these pieces are crafted using reclaimed plastic bottle lids.
Every idea I have and every one-off piece I make has evolved from a love of experimenting with varies textile techniques, combined with a passion for upcycling.

Is it Friday already?
Time flies way too fast. I really enjoy the Friday guest post. It's so nice to be able to learn more about people from the community. If you want to be our Friday guest, just DM me
Today's special guest is Taylor .fox.arts
She doesn't just mend but is utterly creative in so many ways. Welcome Taylor 🧵🪡

My name is Taylor or .fox.arts on Instagram. I live in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with my husband and three kids. I was two when mymother, an accomplished fiber artist, first put a blunt needle and some pink thread in my hands to keep me busy while she was sewing. Today I knit, sew, crochet, quilt…if it involves fiber arts I am interested in it. I have always loved the magic of taking a cherished but worn out object and remaking it, giving  continued life. A pair of linen pants into a jacket, a creative patch that saves a favorite skirt , or a sweater many times darned. There is a story in each stitch of our handwork. There is a story in the things we make, the things we mend, and the things we save. As a fiber artist and mender I am honored each time I get to add a stitch to that story.

Oh dear, I totally forgot to post my done on Sunday. As I'm busy clearing out my father's house I finished my mending before I went. Another hole in my winter coat patched up with a few scraps of fabric. Not much of the original coat left. I had to reattach Kermit the frog a bit too. Some one done a sh*tty job with him? Couldn't be me? Could it?

Happy Friday
Kathrin .berlin is our special Friday guest today.
I'm so excited to introduce her to you. Kathrin is very talented and creative in her work. You should definitely be able to find some new inspiration here today.
If you want to be our next Friday guest just DM me

I was asked by Katrine to do a guest post here about my creative journey and mending practice. Thanks for that and here goes:
I'm Kathrin, 62 years old, from Berlin, where I opened up my studio to the public in 2021. The space was my refuge during the pandemic and now I'm offering courses in sewing, patchwork, upcycling and creative holiday courses for kids.

My creative journey started as a paper collage artist, I took part in group exhibitions live and online, and co-authored two books on collage with my dear partner (I still have some copies, so hit me up if interested).

When I really fell in love with textiles, I started making quilts but soon got uncomfortable with the fabric consumerism of it. So today I mend and make do, use recycled and used materials (and my huge stash) for my quilts and other projects, I host a monthly repair café for textiles every first Saturday and I even refurnish sofas with scraps of furniture fabric :)
I also offer regular workshops where we create things with recycled materials, use plants and pigments for bundle dying and shibori or make coiled baskets from fabric scraps.

Come by if in Berlin, Germany or follow my stuff here on Instagram :)
I just love the mending community here for its friendliness and mutual support and send each and all of you a big hug. May we be the change we'd love to see!

Thanks again and all the best to you,
Kathrin
