A big thank you to and Nina Alsborn for showcasing SYD’s textiles at Dyrsku’n this year!

The event brought together exhibitors from the fields of traditional crafts, design, and craftsmanship, creating a highly professional and inspiring environment.

A special thank you also to , who had her own stand where she, among other things, presented the shirt she designed and made using textile produced by SYD.

Earlier this year, Veronica was nominated as one of ten designers selected for the Craft Biennial by and .no , and she proudly wore the shirt herself throughout the event.

Thank you for a wonderfully executed exhibition and for helping to highlight the possibilities of Norwegian textile craftsmanship.

The cost of a textile. The value of a textile.

A designer lamp is rarely judged only by its price.

Neither is a handcrafted rug, a bespoke piece of furniture, or a custom-built interior.

We instinctively understand that quality materials, skilled craftsmanship and thoughtful design create value.

Yet textiles are often reduced to a simple comparison:

«There are cheaper options.»

But cheaper compared to what?

A textile is not merely a decorative surface.

It influences the atmosphere of a room. The acoustic experience. The tactile experience. The materials we surround ourselves with every day.

At SYD, we choose pure wool, free from plastic fibres and unnecessary chemicals. We choose materials that are better for both people and the environment.

Not because it is the cheapest solution.

But because we believe the materials in our interiors should contribute to wellbeing, durability and connection to nature.

The existence of a cheaper alternative has never been proof of better value.

Perhaps that is as true for textiles as it is for every other element of good design.

Most people don’t know this:
The strongest wool we have in Norway is also the most overlooked.

Spælsau wool — often classified as “low‑value” — has longer and thicker fibers than the wool used in clothing. That makes it perfect for interior textiles where durability truly matters.

At SYD, we use this wool to create fabrics with Martindale 70,000–83,300, completely without plastic.
Just pure Norwegian wool.
Natural strength.
Natural sustainability.

What was once considered waste is now proving to be one of our most resilient resources.

SYD uses this so‑called “unusable wool” in its textiles. This is wool that is undervalued and often ends up being thrown away, burned, or buried. There are several reasons why the lower‑qualified wool has no value: it comes from other sheep breeds than those producing C1 wool, and its fibers differ.

But all wool has properties. The key is to use each type of wool where its natural characteristics make sense. If a wool type isn’t suitable for something, it can be used for other products.

SYD has discovered that C2S wool, when blended with other downgraded Norwegian wool, has a remarkable property: strength. It is a robust wool that performs extremely well where high durability is needed. This means SYD can produce furniture textiles with very high abrasion resistance—without adding plastic.

As a result, these textiles can be recycled or naturally biodegrade at the end of their lifespan. And just as importantly: a natural, renewable resource is put to use instead of being discarded.

Norwegian wool is an underused resource.

Did you know that most of the wool products made in Norway today are not produced from Norwegian wool? The majority of wool used in Norwegian production—whether for interior textiles or clothing—is imported. There are several reasons for this, but one key reason is that there simply isn’t enough Norwegian wool of the quality the industry demands, or what the industry itself calls “usable wool.”

Norway classifies wool from its different sheep breeds into 12 categories, where C1 is the finest quality and C2S is the lowest qualified wool. Today, only C1 wool has any real market value—this is typically lambswool or high‑quality wool from crossbred sheep. The rest is often referred to as “unusable wool.”

Looking back at our heritage, traditions, and history, SYD works with wool from our original native sheep — the Spælsau.

Today, this wool is the most downgraded in Norway, holding almost no commercial value.

Yet it was once the wool the Vikings used for everything — from the sails that carried their ships to the clothes that kept them warm.

Spælsau wool carries remarkable qualities we’ve forgotten to appreciate, including its exceptional strength.

This allows SYD to create contemporary textiles with high durability without adding plastic. Our fabrics release no microplastics and naturally biodegrade when their lifetime is over.

You could say that our textiles is honoring the past and shaping the future.

På oppfordring fra viser jeg toskafttekstilene som flere lurte på om kan brukes til klær.

Tekstilene er plantefarget og finnes pr i dag på l***r i fargene U bjørkebarkrosa, rabarbragrønn og rabarbralysgrønn.

har allerede sydd skjorter av dette tekstilet som kan sees på .no i Oslo. En utstilling i samarbeid med .Ninaskjorta var en av de nominerte på Håndverdsbiannalen i år.

At the request of , I am showcasing the plain-weave textiles that many of you wondered if could be used for clothing.

The textiles are plant-dyed and are currently in stock in the colors birch bark pink, rhubarb green, and rhubarb light green. has already sewn shirts from this textile, which can be seen at .no in Oslo.

An exhibition in collaboration with . The «Nina shirt» was one of the nominees at the Crafts Biennale this year.

Last week, I was lucky enough to be invited to the Håndverksbiennalen by Veronika Glitsch, who designed the beautiful Ninaskjorta out of textiles from SYD.
