A moment for the lighting in the Bard Room at Hotel Chelsea, from the chandeliers overhead to the intricate wall sconces framing the bar.

Each fixture brings its own character to the room, adding a softer layer of atmosphere and drawing the eye to the details that make the space feel so considered.

Just returned home from eight days in NYC to kick start a new project, with a little bit of downtime in between!

Highlights included the Tarot exhibition at the Morgan, a million showrooms (including getting to finally see the amazing WRETCHED FLOWERS new spot - so worth a visit!), catching up with family and friends, hunting through antique and salvage yards in the pits of New Jersey, drinks at the very cool Obvio, and the new Printemps New York department store - holyyy, what a wonderland of tile and wallpaper and stone, an interiors wonderland. Working on some posts with guides on my favorite showrooms, gift shopping, my favourite places to see old New York - let me know if you have any other requests!

The gallery wall in 's flagship store isn't styling — it's owner Kat Tua's aunty's 1970s dolls, photos from the brand's own shoot, images pulled from vintage NZ hiking guides, and antique paintings.

Birch plywood, Aalto's Toi Māori Aotearoa palette, and taonga placed into the room instead of being purely bought for it. That's the difference between a considered space and a decorated one.

The Jane Hotel took in Titanic survivors in 1912. One floor down, Old Rose references it with a single ship model over the bar.

Checkered marble, patinated walls, and arched windows that keep the building's 1908 bones in view.

No two fireplaces in Hotel Chelsea match, and there's a reason - or at least a very good rumour.

Legend has it that because the building went bankrupt before it ever opened, so the original contractors got paid in free rent instead of cash. Which meant each one finished off his own room exactly how he liked it. This shows in the fireplaces - every single one is unique and different. That's the story anyway - nobody's ever fully confirmed it, and Hotel Chelsea has never let the truth get in the way of a good one.

True or not, it's why every mantel in this building tells on the person who built it. We restored each one individually, painstakingly sourcing vintage tile, having some remade, and adding bolection marble mantels to the ones long gone.No two fireplaces in Hotel Chelsea match, and there's a reason - or at least a very good rumour.
