A student and the passing of knowledge.

This Taonga is made from Whale bone, Abalone inlays, an earthly red stain and a waxed polyester 8 plait adjustable cord.

This Tāonga incorporates a variation of the Takarangi pattern to encapsulate the passing of knowledge from generation to generation, master to student and student to master.

The Wheku (carved masks) either side are name Tika and Pono. As people and as practitioners, the path to enlightenment lies in our integrity.

Taratara a Kae is placed on the hands to show where the fruits of our labour comes from which is applied knowledge.

The pieces in between each figure are traditional reels made predominantly during the moa hunter period and used in a similar way on ancient adornment pieces.

In this case they are used to symbolised the link between the present moment and the past.

Here are two beautiful Taonga that I worked on recently. And what an amazing time it was.. pushing personal boundaries and attempting things I wouldn’t necessarily try was apart of this journey. Great learnings and Ready for the next 👍🏼

These two Taonga were cut from the same stone, carved side by side and finished together.. The two people who purchased them didn’t know each other but are living in the same city. They could have been in different parts of the world but instead, they ended up near each other.

Carved utilising a unique kohatu from Te Puna o te Ao Marama - decorated with kiri kiore and pākura. Manaia figures holding hidden message and adorned with Taratara a Kae - Paua (abalone) inlays - 4 plait waxed polyester cord.

Te pūrakau o Kupe raua ko Kewa.
-
This whēku tells the story of when Kupe arrived to the bottom of the South Island, te waka a Maui, at this moment in time, Stewart island was still connected to the mainland with massive sand dunes. Kupe called upon Kewa who came in the form of a whale and is said to be the god of sea animals, to assist him in clearing the dunes and creating a path through. Kewa answered the call and cleared the way, during this time, many small island were created and Kewa also lost a tooth which he spat out.

This piece holds elements of this story and provides a platform for the wearer to speak on it.
