Two different Pikorua. Both from the same tree.

But one has had the natural voids filled with kauri gum & resin and the other one has been left natural without filling the voids.

Which one do you like the most? With the natural voids or with the kauri gum & resin?

Would love to hear your thoughts and which one you like the most?

Some finished pics of the latest swamp Kauri Pikorua. Beautiful colours coming out of this piece of wood now it has some oil on it.
Originally I had planned to fill the natural voids with kauri gum and resin but I had a request from a very lovely customer who asked it could be kept natural with the voids. So I cleaned the voids and put some oil on it and I think it has come up really nice. I quite liking the natural look.
What do you think of the natural look?

Why did the chicken cross the concrete? 🙄🤣
They’ve been installing fibre on our road and had to replace some concrete and of course we live in Valley where the bird life just roam around living their best lives. So of course it was pretty funny when we walked out to see a chicken had walked right through the middle of the concrete. Not even across it, just straight through the middle! 🤣

Had another physio appointment this afternoon. More needles jabbed in to my butt (sounds worse than it actually was, but I don’t like needles, which is why I’ll never be a junky!🤣) and more cupping which I don’t mind at all.
But this is a very important stage for me. Because I’m feeling ok at the mo and in the past when I’ve had a back injury it’s usually at this stage that I’ll go back to work, when I shouldn’t. The muscles are still very tight and need to relax more before any real work can be done to correct myself. But being self employed and working on my own it’s never easy when you get injured. There’s no one else to carry on with the workload which is why in the past I have pushed myself back in to work when I probably should have still been resting.
I’m not going to lie though, the past few weeks have been difficult with not being able to work I haven’t had an income. So financially it has been hard and this is one of the main reasons I have always pushed myself back in to work. But this time around I have to listen to the professionals and keep resting and looking after myself in the hopes that I can recover to 100% again (hopefully sooner rather than later) and get back in to the workshop so I can make that money!!
But in saying that, I’m still back in the workshop doing small jobs that I can handle without jeopardising my health. Still definitely no heavy lifting though. Just some light sanding work and maybe a little bit on the power tools but not too much. And always reminding myself to take a break and not push it too hard, which has been a problem for me in the past. I find it hard to sit still when I know there is so much to be done.
But this primo weather we are experiencing at the moment makes it a little easier to take a break and enjoy the sunshine while it’s out. Bring on Summer and good health!!

I’ve been working on this swamp Kauri Pikorua today. Giving it the final sand so this evening I can do the fun part and put some oil on it.

As a woodworker you spend countless hours sanding followed by more sanding to get to this stage where the fun begins and you get to put the finish on it and see all your hard work come to life. And all those countless hours of sanding for a few minutes of pure joy seeing the oil go on and watching the wood come to life.

I’m off to physio tomorrow to get more work done on my back. As much as I dislike sanding it’s about the only thing I can manage at the moment. Just taking one day at a time. But I’m looking forward to physio tomorrow and hoping next week I can get back on the tools!!

As well as a Kauri Pikorua I am working on, I’m also planning to make another hei matau inspired serving board. But this time with just the black resin and no shark teeth.
When I was working on the shark teeth board I caught it at different stages and one of the stages was when it was like this with only black resin and I had loads of comments and messages from people saying how much they loved this board with just the black resin. So for all of you who wanted to see a board like this well it’s my next board on the list of boards to make. You can either pre order it or I might just raffle it off seeing as though I had a good response to the last hei matau inspired board that we raffled off.
