When it comes to Mid-Century Modern, it takes more than a good piece of teak and a slice of nostalgia to turn our heads. We look for pieces with the sesame clear eye we apply to antiques: looking for good lines, classic proportions, comfort where applicable, and style always.

A final moody moment, like a deep breath, as the Lunar New Year ushers in new beginnings. The seasons change and so too does our studio, so we pause to collect ourselves with exciting things on the horizon.

An ambush of tigers surrounds the Spanish Dining Table from JS Editions! Flared sabre legs and a curved back distinguish these klismos chairs, built by to a design received from Antiquity. They are completed in a cotton velvet from . Churrigueresque or Spanish Baroque legs and ironwork define the dark oak table.

In the next frame, our friend David is juxtaposed with the pure form of the Frank Table Lamp from . Echoing the quintessential minimalism of Jean-Michel Frank, the lamp is as comfortable in a pared-back, modern interior as it is alongside our Orangery Dining Table - this one in a whitewashed French oak.

Lastly, upholstered in a perfectly complementary linen from , a Louis XVI period settee. Possessed of well-defined carving, undiminished by the years, and as JS says, “staggeringly comfortable.” In the hallows above, the Montferrat Leaf Chandelier by - a favourite at John Stephens & Company.

Emphasising handmade fabrics, natural materials, and traditional processes, the lampshades from Vaughan Designs represent the designer’s full expression - and we wouldn’t use anything else!

Atop turned and fluted legs, a Louis XVI armchair, sumptuous and inviting, is covered in charcoal cotton velvet. The bleached frame perfectly balances the intensity.

With its attractive gun-barrel turning, this Georgian wine table c. 1770, is timeless. It sits harmoniously beside a Spanish side table of a hundred years later, and a black Pierre Vandel coffee table, from the middle of the 20th-century.

Completing the scene are some of our favourite objects. A Montparnasse frame from the 1920s looks down upon Vaughan Designs’ triumphal Chineham Lamp in solid Italian alabaster. Beside, an 18th-century glazed jug in the manner of an urn, vivid green, holds some of the first figs of the season, as our friend David looks on.
