Nigella damascena has collected quite the list of names over the years! Most inspired by the way its delicate flowers sit amongst that wonderfully fine, feathery foliage.

Romantic Love-in-a-Mist.
Slightly more sinister Devil-in-a-Bush.
Rather inappropriate Virgin-in-the-Green.
And then, Ragged Lady.

I think Nigella is interesting enough without any of them. But Love-in-a-Mist is pretty hard to beat!

Which name gets your vote?

I’ve had to completely rethink what success means to me.

Not because I stopped being ambitious. I’m probably more ambitious than ever. But the things I want from my life have changed… so surely the way I measure whether I’m doing well has to change too?

You can’t build a different life and judge it by the old rules. New life? New rules!

I’m still figuring out the new ones. Worth remembering!
Save this for the days you forget 🙏🏼

I got lots of creative comments about this gorgeous, huge, bright red anemone (yes it’s almost the size of my head) when I posted this on my story the other day…. What’s your suggestion?

Ranunculus really don’t do subtlety!

Armfuls of ridiculously colourful ranunculus, grown here in my Auckland flower garden and now putting on one hell of a spring show!

Layers and layers of petals, incredible colours, and one of my absolute favourites for cutting and floristry.

Swipe through for the colour ➡️ Which one are you taking home?

Typical princess… turns up last and steals the whole show. And I’m talking about the tulips!

Orange Princess is one of the last tulips flowering in my garden this season and, in my opinion, I may have saved the best for last.

Big, ridiculously full blooms, layer upon layer of orange, peach and flashes of green thanks to it being a peony variety. There have been a few tulips this year that won’t be making the cut for next season but this isn’t one of them.

Princess or diva? Swipe through and decide for yourself (yes, I still mean the tulips…) 😂

September was… a lot!

Tulips everywhere. Flowers to cut and bouquets to make. Seeds to sow and the bumblebees are back in the garden! Plus I had some seriously big jobs squeezed in between.

It felt like the month when the garden stopped quietly hinting at spring and just went for it. And I think I did too!

Busy, colourful, slightly messy… but very, very good.

Maybe the biggest change in mid-life isn’t your life. It’s how you SEE it…

I’ve thought a lot about this over the last couple of years.

About change. About what life is ‘supposed’ to look like. About who we think we’re supposed to become, and especially about what we call success.

For a long time, I had a fairly clear picture of where my life was going and what I was supposed to make of it.

Then I started moving away from it.

At first, that can feel like starting again. Like you’ve somehow wandered off the path you spent years building.

But I don’t see it that way anymore. But it took time.

I’m not starting again. I’m beginning a new chapter.
I’m not giving up on success. I’m refining what matters.
I’m not trying to become someone new. I’m becoming more myself.
And maybe what we so easily call a ‘midlife crisis’ is something much more interesting: a crisis of identity that finally makes us question who we are, what we want and what we want to put into the world.

Looking back, that change has been one of the best things I’ve experienced.

It’s given me the chance to discover parts of myself I hadn’t had the time, space or courage to explore before and now I realise that it’s never too late to question the plan.

Anyone else finding that life looks quite different from the one they planned? And what a relief right?!

Come and see what else is growing in my greenhouse…

Not only am I germinating and growing young flower seedlings, the greenhouse allows me to grow some hot happy varieties! I’ve got tomatoes, chilli, capsicum, cucumber, lettuce and lots of herbs that will love the warm environment.

I’ve even got strawberries here which are loving the warm start. They’ll require watering almost everyday when things warm up!

I’ve got these large containers stacked on swappa crates to give them some height and create layers so I can maximise space. The cucumbers are at the top so they can trail down. And I’ve made use of spare space in the pots with lettuces and herbs.

The strawberries are in raised planters that I can drag outside when the temp gets too hot for them. They love the warmth but not the humidity.

In our part of the world the summer gets to a good temperature, and the greenhouse can be almost too hot for many spring and summer veggies. Especially if they are not hydrated and ventilated well. So I’ve got things in here that love the warmth and respond well to that warm air feeling!

Just another reason this spot has become my favourite little haven 🙏🏼

Wait just a minute…

When I finally got some new boots I was so excited I almost threw the old ones out! But don’t worry, I saved them… after all, you can never really have enough planters. Gardeners will know!

Bedsides, these boots have memories 🙏🏼
