Curtains that hover above the floor are the single biggest giveaway of a rental-grade finish. We never let a renovation finish with that.

Three acceptable lengths, all of them floor-length:
Kiss — fabric just touches the floor. The NZ standard and safest choice.
Break — fabric sits 5–15mm above the floor. Practical for operable curtains on tracks.
Puddle — 30–50mm of fabric pools on the floor. Formal, dramatic, not practical for curtains you open and close daily.

Curtains that end at the window sill or hover 50mm off the floor look unfinished — no matter how nice the fabric is. Measure to the finished floor before you order, not to the existing carpet (which you might be replacing).

Most DIY kitchen advice in NZ comes from people selling flat-pack cabinets. None of it tells you which parts of the job you're legally allowed to do once the boxes arrive.

A kitchen is usually the one room where water, gas and a high-load electrical circuit meet in the same wall, so the line matters more here than anywhere else in the house.

Yours to do: removing and installing cabinets, fitting the benchtop, tiling the splashback, flooring, paint, swapping a tap, and sliding a new dishwasher into the old one's spot on the existing valve and waste.

Not yours: lifting the old sink out and undoing the trap. Under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act, disconnecting a sink is sanitary plumbing, so the Saturday rip-out with the plumber booked for Monday is restricted work before the first cabinet comes off the wall. Gas has no homeowner exemption at all.

A second sink in the island or scullery is an extra sanitary fixture, and Auckland Council says that needs a building consent.

The guide goes task by task, from the legislation and Council's own published rules. For anything structural or a consent question on your own kitchen, talk to Auckland Council or a Licensed Building Practitioner.

She's not the loudest in any meeting — and she doesn't need to be. Confidence, in her view, comes from preparation, not personality. The person who's done the homework is calm because they don't need to perform. You see it in her drawings, her client meetings, and the way she defends a design decision when someone questions it.

The scale rule our design team applies to every dining pendant in an Auckland renovation:

Pendant width = 50–65% of your table width. A 900mm table suits a 450–600mm pendant. A 1200mm table suits 600–780mm. Outside that range, the pendant either floats too small or dominates the table.

For long tables — 2.4m plus — two matching pendants spaced evenly, or a single linear fitting parallel to the table. Both work. Just commit to one; a row of three mismatched pendants looks indecisive.

And always get them on a dimmer.

One rule for dining room rugs — everything else flows from it. We brief this on every Auckland dining-room renovation that includes styling.

The rug extends 600mm past each side of the table. Every side. That's the distance a chair travels when pulled out to sit. Any smaller and chair legs catch on the edge every time.

A 900 × 1800mm table needs a rug at least 2100 × 3000mm. A round 1200mm table needs a round rug at least 2400mm in diameter. Match the rug shape to the table shape.

Centre the rug under both table and pendant. That alignment is what makes the room feel considered.
