A closer look at The Clements Hotel in Cambridge, through the lens of Hamish Melville.

From the timber joinery and arched fanlight of the arrival spaces to the exposed brick and pressed metal ceiling of the 1866 Speakeasy Bar, these images beautifully capture the character we worked to retain, alongside the comfort and detail of a contemporary five star hotel.

Delighted to see 599A Colombo complete. Working within a 5m wide footprint, this two level building carefully integrates commercial and office space across 151m2, proof a narrow site can still hold its own on the street. Thanks to J&L Construction for making it a smooth sailing build from start to finish.

It also gives something back to the street. The side wall now carries a mural by Australian artist Fintan Magee, painted for Sea Signals, an ocean-conservation street art project from PangeaSeed Foundation, Flare Ōtautahi Street Art Festival and Watch This Space. We love seeing a wall we drew become part of the city's canvas.

A good milestone at Arbor Green in Rolleston: all the Formance SIP panels are now installed across the ten homes. Credit to the Home Construction team on site. Plenty still ahead, and looking forward to seeing these homes finished.

The Clements Hotel is a careful restoration and reinvention of Cambridge's historic Masonic Hotel, established in 1866 and rebuilt in Beaux-Arts style in the early 1900s, now transformed into a 29-room, five-star boutique destination. The project required a sensitive balance between extensive seismic strengthening and the expectations of a contemporary luxury hotel. Original features, including stained-glass windows, the sweeping timber staircase, exposed red brick, parquet flooring, and generous ceiling heights, have been deliberately retained and celebrated throughout.

Luxury accommodation is complemented by layered hospitality experiences: the Gallery Restaurant, the all-day Clements Café and Wine Bar, and 1866, a speakeasy-style cocktail bar set within the building's original basement. Flexible event and meeting spaces further position the hotel as a gathering place for visitors and the local community alike.

The project establishes a balance between restoration and reinvention, honouring the building’s legacy while positioning it as a vibrant social hub. Through careful spatial planning and a cohesive interior language, The Clements Hotel reconnects heritage architecture with modern expectations of comfort, atmosphere and experience.

Back at Ronald McDonald House. Last week our Auckland team continued a Hierarchy Group tradition, swapping drawing boards for aprons to cook dinner for the families staying at the House.

For Amanda, the evening meant a little more:

"A few years ago I spent a lot of time at the House with a friend's child while they were recovering from heart surgery. I experienced firsthand how much the House means to families going through such a difficult time. Being able to give something back by cooking a fun meal and hopefully bringing a little extra joy to the kids and their families was incredibly rewarding."

Thank you Ronald McDonald House Charities New Zealand for having us back.

Both projects are in Cashmere Estate, Christchurch, two of 33 celebrated across the regions on the night.

Congratulations to all the winners. The depth of design talent across Nelson, Canterbury and Westland was on full display.

Thanks to Architectural Designers New Zealand for the recognition, and to the clients who trusted us with these projects.

Progress at Auckland Airport. Hierarchy Group have been working closely with the team at Lagardère Travel Retail for over a year on the new duty free spaces across the international terminal. First up is Pier A, now largely complete.

Delivered airside in a live terminal, this one is a real team effort. A busy few months ahead as the remaining spaces take shape. More to come.

Hierarchy Day brought our Auckland and Christchurch teams together, and it was a lovely reminder of the people who make this place what it is. A chance to reconnect, look at how far we have come, and get excited for what's ahead. Proud of this team, and the journey in front of us!

Hierarchy Group have been working closely with the team at Christchurch International Airport for the past two years on the Domestic Terminal Upgrade project. The work spans multiple connected spaces, including the redesign of the Level 1 food court seating areas, a new activation space for pop-up retail and events, departures lounge seating, new parents’ rooms and bathroom upgrades, and the recently opened new playground.

The Antarctic themed playground, named Little Explorers Base Camp, is an amazing addition to the terminal. Anyone who's travelled with small kids knows the in between moments are the hardest, the wait after check-in, the stretch before boarding, the energy with nowhere to go. The new space gives kids room to play and explore, and gives parents a place to sit down, catch their breath, and enjoy the start of the trip together.

Hierarchy Group’s role included initial space planning, designing bespoke furniture solutions and seating options for increased visibility across the space and coordination with the playground designer to ensure connectivity with the adjacent parents’ room and food court, while still ensuring a safe space for kids to be let free in.

Hierarchy Group is pleased to welcome Peter Rozecki-Lewis as Studio Principal of our Auckland studio.

A registered architect, Peter has spent almost twenty one years working across the UK and Aotearoa, on everything from civic and commercial buildings to schools and housing. He's as comfortable in an early client conversation as he is on site sorting out a tricky detail, and sustainability is core to how he designs, not an afterthought. He also brings real depth in public sector work, with projects delivered for the Department of Corrections, the New Zealand Defence Force and several other government agencies.

"Peter brings the leadership and experience we wanted for our Auckland studio. He understands the market, and we're confident in the direction he'll take the team," says Director Ashton Wright.

Welcome aboard Peter.
