The Delightful Shade

The Delightful Shade Creator of bespoke, beautiful handmade lampshades using traditional handsewn methods.

I started making lampshades because I love how a beautiful fabric matched to the right frame can light up a room and be that final touch that makes you go wow! To create lampshades that fit a variety of frames with lining I've learnt traditional hand sewing techniques, noting that there is still much more to learn!! But I enjoy the challenge of taking a tired, old frame and construct something new

. The Delightful Shade has come at a time in my life when I can use those dormant sewing skills, my engineering knowledge combined with lots of fabric shopping to create unique, modern lampshades.

The fabric for this shade comes from - it’s beautiful quality and I absolutely love it. It’s a simple tailored shade with binding trim using contrasting colour. This isn’t lined because I wanted to focus on the fabric. FYI the trims probably took longer to make than the shade, but so worth it.

Knife pleat #2 - I had to try this when I got home and I had the perfect fabric, lightweight and soft pattern that was enhanced with the pleating. It’s a big shade so work well in a floor standard lamp. I used every pin making this one, my fingers suffered a little😂.
This is lined with a ballon lining, and the trim is a contrasting green (after much deliberation and trial!!)

Knife pleats- I recently spent some time in the UK with learning some new skills. This is a knife pleat lampshade with a gathered lining. I really like this effect with the right fabric.

Finally finished this lampshade and I love it - the colours are bright, vibrant and light up a room. This involved learning some new techniques which were great to try. I think I might keep this one!!

This lampshade is a labour of love - lots and lots of sewing, I decided to line it to hide the frame and diffuse the light better (it really does make a difference). I’ve deliberated on loads of different trim colours- white, a green, a contrast, some fringe - tried a few options but in the end I just couldn’t get quite the right colour…so I went with a bias trim. I think I’ll try dying in the future.

This is my latest lampshade - you can it started as an old gathered shade in beige! I played around with the lining and decided to go with a 8 panel balloon lining. I love this material with green trim, and the lining softens the light beautifully. Available in Wellington $350.

This was a fun little Christmas project visiting family. It was an old shade with fabric that tearing, appliqué flowers and trim falling off. But the frame was an unusual shape. This is a modern fabric using Australian native plants which suited the room.

This is a sweet gathered lampshade using a light cotton with soft flowers. It gathers beautifully and would make a perfect bed lampshade- it needs the trim added but I wanted to add the right colour depending on the room. It could be pink, green, orange, yellow or purple, depending on what colour he room colour is.
