At the beginning of October I had the privilege of hosting a Dahlia Cutting Workshop for a lovely group of green thumbs!

It was a wet and windy Wellington day yet we were super cosy in the greenhouse sipping tea and getting our hands dirty.

A big shout out to .shoots.and.fruits for gifting some garden inspired treats for the goodie bags 🌸

And thank you to for offering up their garden for the event it was the perfect location to to feel both inspired and snug on an early Spring day.

I think I've found my calling with teaching workshops so this is only just the beginning! Thank you to all those who invested in the day, I'll be forever grateful for your support 💞

I've been getting started with the great divide! But that doesn't mean you have to 😜

Before you start dividing you must ask yourself why?!

If you are a home gardener and have clumps of tubers that you are keen to divide, you can wait until just before planting out in the garden (Oct/Nov) before you divide.

At this time the tubers will naturally wake up and begin to shoot, making dividing a lot easier.

If you would like to PRESPROUT your tubers, to give them a head start then you can start dividing 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. For me this is mid September.

Finally if you would like to begin taking cuttings then you can begin dividing now (in August). Dividing tubers while they are still dormant is a bit more tricky because the eyes aren't clearly visible. But waking them up early will give you lots of time to take cuttings of your favourite varieties.

The dahlia tubers I have started to divide now and just for cuttings and I will hold off on the remainder until September.

Let me know any questions you have about dividing dahlia tubers and I'll try to answer them in my next reel 🥔🤎
