No AI art, just patience and a lot of pen and mouse work. Currently on a watercolour learning journey. ā€‹ā€œArt is an escape for me from the hustle of everyday life. I create because it makes me feel whole and it is my passion.ā€

I was born in Thames, New Zealand and studied a Bachelor of Media Arts in Hamilton. I currently work as a graphic designer and llive near the beach in Auckland, New Zealand with my family. My journey as an artist has been both revitalised and influenced by my trips abroad to places like India and my year sabbatical living in China 2015. From the use of bright colours to patterns, the inspiration is evident in my work. I draw my work inspiration from my life experiences and surroundings. My work explores themes of nature/environment, popular culture, and portraiture. I have a vibrant digital pop art aesthetic that plays with ben-day dots, positive and negative space and 2D shapes to create dimension and texture. Follow my artistic journey on Facebook to keep up-to-date with my latest releases and art projects.

Growing up, we had so many mandarins we gave them away by the bag šŸŠ

Back then everyone shared their backyard fruit. A bag of lemons turning up at work, feijoas from a friend, mandarins handed round to whoever wanted them. It was just what you did.

That’s what this artwork is about. Mandarins and harakeke flowers tucked into my favourite vintage Crown Lynn swan. I called it Mandarin Backyard Bliss, and it takes me straight back to that feeling of having plenty to share.

Who shared their fruit with you growing up? šŸ‘‡

One of the most-loved prints I’ve ever made. 🌸

Crowned Dahlia started with a bunch of dahlias from my mother-in-law’s garden, popped into a Crown Lynn swan. It’s been finding homes all over Aotearoa ever since, and it’s still one of my best sellers.

It’s back in my own online shop now, printed to order here in NZ in square sizes from small to statement, framed or unframed.

I’ve popped the link in the first comment so you can find your size.

Where would you hang it: kitchen, lounge or bedroom? šŸ‘‡

The question I get asked most: what size do I need? šŸ–¼ļø

Here’s my honest answer after years of selling prints.

The little 210 x 210mm square has always been my best seller. It sits beautifully on a shelf or dresser with your treasures, and it’s the easiest one to gift.

297 x 297mm is the sweet spot for a desk, bedside or hallway. Big enough to make a statement in a small space.

420mm and up is where things get bold. Above the sofa, the bed or a sideboard, that’s where a big piece really sings.

My quick rule: aim for art about two thirds the width of the furniture underneath it.

I’ve popped my full sizing guide in the first comment if you’d like a closer look. šŸ‘‡

Where’s the empty wall in your house right now? Lounge, hallway, bedroom?

Every line of this huia was pressed into pewter by hand. 🪶

It started as one of my lace drawings. Then my friend, Tauranga metal artist Ninette Kruger- Pewter artist and metal embossing tutor, pressed it into a sheet of pewter, swirl by swirl, until the huia rose right up off the surface.

The huia hasn’t been seen since the early 1900s, so this felt like a way to bring it back, something you could almost reach out and touch.

Huia’s Lustrous Lacework is one of a kind, and the last piece from our series. All the details are on my website, link in bio.

Save this if you love our native birds, and share it with someone who’d appreciate the craft.

Swipe slowly through these. Every leaf and swirl you can see was pressed into pewter by hand. 🪶

This is Huia’s Lustrous Lacework, a collaboration piece with my friend, Tauranga metal artist Ninette Kruger Metal Art.

Ninette and I met back in 2020, when she spotted my artwork in the Chooice Facebook group and messaged me. Her love of pewter came from her grandmother, and for her, working in metal is calm in the middle of a busy life. We had a hunch my lace drawings would look incredible in pewter. We were right.

It started as one of my lace drawings (photo 2), every leaf, swirl and pattern drawn by me. Ninette took it from there with her little tools (photo 3), pressing my lines into a sheet of pewter until the huia rose up off the surface. Working in metal, she naturally brings her own touch to every curve and texture, so the finished piece is my lace, brought to life by her hands.

The huia hasn’t been seen since the early 1900s. I wanted to bring it back in a way you could almost reach out and touch, and a little reminder of how precious our native birds are. Seeing it shimmer on a wall still gets me every time.

It’s 60 x 60cm, sealed in resin and mounted on a matt black panel, ready to hang. One of a kind, and the last piece from our series still looking for its forever home (NZ$3,500 + shipping).

Have you ever seen pewter metal art up close in real life? It’s one of those things photos never quite do justice.

Did anyone else grow up with Crown Lynn in their house? šŸ’›

When we visited my grandparents' farm on the Coromandel during the school holidays, there was always a white Crown Lynn swan sitting by the porch door. It was filled with all sorts of bits and bobs, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing.

Funny how little things like that stick with you, isn't it?

Over the years, I've developed a real love for Crown Lynn, both as a collector and as an artist. The patterns, the flowers and the stories behind these much-loved Kiwi treasures are a big part of what inspires my work.

The plate I'm holding here is my Crown Lynn Filigree 600, one of the pieces in my collection.

And here's a lovely local connection I only discovered recently: the story behind Crown Lynn began right here in Hobsonville, just around the corner from where I live now!

I've shared more about my collection, those childhood memories and how Crown Lynn has inspired my art in my latest blog, if you'd like to have a read:

But first, I'd love to know ... did your family have a Crown Lynn swan, a favourite jug, or a dinner set that only came out for special occasions?

I'd love to hear your memories. 😊

Confession: restarting my art business after a big break has meant SO much behind the scenes. I've barely picked up a brush (or my iPad pencil)! Instead I've been fine-tuning and refreshing everything: building my website, reworking pricing and products, and quietly planning a couple of exciting collaborations I can't wait to share. It's all coming together, and I'm so excited for what's ahead.

So tonight I'm revisiting an old favourite: The Magnificent Mānuka.

I love mānuka for its healing powers, and honestly, just because it's so pretty.
🌿 Māori have used it in rongoā (traditional healing) for generations, from leaf infusions to its gum soothing burns
šŸ Bees turn its flowers into the famous mānuka honey
ā˜• Captain Cook's crew brewed its leaves as tea, which is how it got the nickname "tea tree"
šŸ¤Ž Look closely and you'll spot the little woody seed capsules. They often stay on the branches all year round

Are you a mānuka honey fan? On toast, in tea, or straight off the spoon? šŸÆ

A little life update and reintroduction from me… 🌿

If you’re new here, I’m Anna Mollekin, an artist and designer living in Auckland, by the sea. 🌊 I create artwork inspired by Aotearoa, nature, our beautiful flora and fauna, pattern and all those little nostalgic things that remind us of home.

And if you’ve been here for a while… you might need a little reminder because, apart from a some appearances over the last few months, I pretty much disappeared off the face of the earth for a while! šŸ˜‚

It’s been a BIG few months of change, uncertainty, moving, job hunting and figuring out what comes next.

Things haven’t quite panned out the way I originally thought they would, but I’m starting to think perhaps that’s exactly how it was meant to happen.

Because along the way, I realised just how much I miss running my own creative business.

I miss making art.
I miss talking to all of you.
And I even miss geeking out over website design! šŸ˜‚

So I’m very excited to say that I’m heading back in that direction. ā¤ļø

I’ll be working on my art full-time again, with some very exciting things happening behind the scenes that I’m not quite ready to announce yet.

New artworks, greeting cards coming very soon, collaborations and a few other creative avenues are all in the works. I can’t wait to share more with you when the time is right.

And this piece, 'Ode to the Flowers', feels like the perfect artwork to share today.

Originally digitally drawn in 2021, it was inspired by the beauty of Aotearoa’s flora and the joy and happiness it brings.

A little reminder that life is beautiful, even when things don’t quite go according to plan. 🌸

It feels like the right artwork for this new chapter.

It’s been a mega week of moving and shaking, and I’m so grateful you’re still here. šŸ’š

If you’re new here, say hi and tell me where you’re following from. And if you’ve been here a while, say hi anyway! I’d love to reconnect.
