I’m partway into capturing a tideline discovery, reflecting on the joy of wandering barefooted along the sand. This will be a lovely reminder of summer’s feelings.

I appreciate living in a city that has such wonderful views on our doorstep. The dawn sky was streaked with a bonfire of colours, silhouetting the masts and towers propping up the calm air. The lazy rhythm of slow ripples stretched and blended the palette of reflections in infinite ways, quietly applauded by the quiet slap of halyards. I created this with fast bold loose strokes of juicy paint, trying to retain the fresh crisp chill of the morning and the striking impact of the colours.

In the branches bold arcs of sturdy bottle-green leaves, there are always exceptions. Individual leaves are shed throughout the seasons, turning wonderful carnival colours before dropping and drying to dull beige. Feasting insects leave their stamp on each one, with windows, notches and blotches punctuating the kaleidoscope. I love the huge range that is normal for this tree.

I’ve applied some feedback suggestions to increase the contrasts and emphasise the highlights.
Does it remind anyone of their Northward journeys? What do you see in the shapes of the islands and headlands of NZ?

I wonder what laughter, grief and resilience this time-scarred tree has witnessed—how many people has it shaded and sheltered; how many generations has it stood watch over?
Its roots are deep in the whenua that my family has inhabited for decades. You may even know where it stands. It’s more than a tree—it’s a keeper of our stories.

Is there a tree that’s part of your history, too?

Sandhoppers in the cool damp shade, the gentle murmur of the ripples, a tinge of colour in the sky above the ancient Pohutukawa tree. The daytime birds are muted and the Morepork has not yet started its nightly hunt. Thoughts of food have enticed away the kids whose sandy feet have smoothed the bark

Pirates like this one used to steal my primary school lunch! Raucous flocks of Red Billed Gulls / Tarāpunga knew the school timetable well and were attentive experts at spotting an unguarded sandwich. Sentries like this one are a fundamental part of our beach scene, and so I was horrified to read last week that these really common seabirds have been rapidly declining.
This picture reminds me of how quickly we can lose something we take for granted.
