Artist spotlight: "Thyme Out" by Nicky Thompson

There's a stillness in Nicky Thompson's work that stops you mid-step. Thyme Out captures the quiet magic of the South Island's back-country huts, simple structures that have weathered decades, standing sentinel against the mountains. Layered with Nicky's signature lace detailing and native bird motifs, the piece carries a gentle sense of movement, as if a breeze is drifting through the canvas.

Anchored by the striking turquoise of the Kawarau River, it's an invitation to pause, to breathe in the deafening quiet of the journey, and simply be still.

Nicky Thompson is a Cromwell-based contemporary artist known for her large-scale South Island landscapes, blending oil and acrylic with intricate lace and native bird imagery drawn from a lifetime of exploring the region.
