Yes I still have some epic seedlings fails even though I have started probably millions of seeds!

Flowers are quite particular about their germination requirements, and if you don’t get it exactly right - this is sometimes the result!

These are Larkspur…one of the trickier seeds to get through to seedling size. And that’s why I unashamedly get the experts to grow my larkspur for my flower crops (along with my delphiniums, campanula, poppies, lisianthus…and quite a few others)

And if you’re a commercial flower grower in NZ, I can organise the experts to grow seedlings for you as well, and get them couriered to your door (or the door of a friend if you live rurally!)

How’s this for a sales pitch - come and buy our underwhelming tulips!

Yes that’s right…we want you to be underwhelmed when you pick up your tulips.

Our goal is to let YOU experience the joy of seeing these magical blooms open and continue to grow at home in your vase (and trust us - they open quickly!)

So we harvest them at the bud stage, chill them in our chiller, then wrap them tight to keep their stems nice and straight.

So if they look underwhelming, then we’ve done a great job and you’re going to get all the magic happening before your eyes.

And why should you trust us with this…because we’ve been growing and selling tulips for 8 years 🌷

The first tulip harvest of the season deserves its own celebration 🎉

It’s the start of the frantic part of our flower year - our tulips get harvested twice a day and need to be dealt with straight away. Luckily the season starts with a trickle of tulips before the main crop arrives in what feels like a deluge.

We’re also running about 3-4 weeks later than our crop last year. We started planting the bulbs about a week later, and our Winter has been much colder than we are used to here in the north, so they have been keeping us waiting.

Thanks to all of you who have messaged looking for where you can buy our tulips. It’s great to know so many locals are wanting to get their hands on locally grown flowers. We’re still a few days (maybe a week) from having excess tulips that we can sell in bunches (because we have a few standing orders that get top priority)

The best way to stay in the loop about where and how to purchase our tulips is to sign up to our email list. We promise not to pester you with emails - maybe 1 or 2 a week for the next 6 weeks while we have tulips to brighten up your life. We don’t ship our tulips, so obviously you need to live (or work) in the Warkworth/Matakana region (or have family that does - they make a great surprise treat!)

P.S. the first variety we have flowering is ‘Avant Garde’ - it opens to a dreamy pale lemon, and is a peony type with plenty of petals.

Do you ever make inconvenient deadlines for yourself?

I promised myself (and my accountant) that I would finalise my tax stuff before I harvested any tulips…and now that’s a bit of a problem because the tulips are ready and the tax isn’t done!

So just bare with me while I sort my tax paperwork, and then we’ll rock on into tulip season 🌷

P.S. I procrastinate over my tax every year, and when I sit down to sort the necessary bits of info for the accountant it never takes very long. So why do I make it this big scary job in my head … 🤷‍♀️

And if you’re reading this Christine…expect a tax email from me tomorrow!

It’s almost that time of the year when we get our first real crop of Spring - Tulips! And they are a welcome sight after a very grey winter…

The next batch of Nga Rakau seedlings have been delivered, and dispatch starts on Monday.

We’ve tried to make these seedlings accessible to small scale flower farmers by offering half and quarter tray options, but that means someone has to cut up all those trays!

And this weekend that someone is me 💪

All up I have to make 366 tray cuts, which is a bit hard on the hands, so I’ll probably do it in 4 stints.

The weather is looking perfect for seedling storage and dispatch…just a few showers to water them this weekend, then sunshine for dispatching next week.

So I’ll sleep okay at night 🌱

I’m only growing a few ranunculus this year. I was going to limit myself to 3 crates, but 15 crates later I’ve forced myself to stop!

I’m really just growing them so I can take photos for my MY PATCH seedlings sales next Autumn.

I’m usually a fan of the pale colours, but some of the deep pinks in the berries and cream mix are really growing on me!

Not all dahlias are well behaved when it comes to dividing them.

Some have dozens of tightly packed tubers with short necks that are impossible to divide without damaging a lot of them.

So I always start my tubers dividing off with an easy-to-divide variety! I think it’s a smart move…

This year I decided Flower Farmer- Sarah Koks ‘Sarah’ was the best behaved, so she was first on the dividing bench.

5 short minutes later we had piles of nice chunky little tubers, with virtually no wastage.

Apparently her ‘sister’ Flower Farmer- Sarah Koks ‘Leah’ is also easy to divide, so I’ll be finding her crate of tubers tomorrow.

Both highly recommended varieties if you ever get the chance to purchase them!
