Colour, wallpaper, lighting, furniture and the original features can all play a part. The key is knowing how to bring them together.

How do you combine patterns without making a room feel too busy?

It starts with the overall scheme—considering colour, scale, texture and how each element relates to the others.

A geometric wallpaper, botanical fabrics and bold floral print can all have a place in a home. The trick is knowing how to balance them so the result feels cohesive rather than chaotic.

This is one of the parts of interior design I love : bringing individual elements together to create a home with character and personality.

Can you transform a home without completely changing the layout?

Absolutely. Sometimes the biggest difference comes from rethinking the finishes, materials, lighting and furnishings rather than starting again with the floor plan.

In this kitchen and family room transformation at Light + Dark, the overall layout remains broadly similar. The impact came from bringing the spaces together through carefully selected cabinetry stone surfaces, feature wallpaper, lighting and upholstery.

The result is a more considered, cohesive interior, with practical details that work for everyday living.

This is where interior design adds value: not simply choosing beautiful finishes, but understanding how the elements work together to make a home feel right.

The original kitchen didn't look that bad. But architecturally the windows were wrong and the kitchen didn't feel appropriate for the heritage home.

Extending the kitchen and making the windows heritage appropriate, gave us a bigger space for the kitchen.

We also took the opportunity to fix the foundations and lay reclaimed timber flooring.

Reclaimed vintage lighting and handmade tiles make sure the kitchen doesn't feel sterile.

A great before and after project.

The new layout allows access into the kitchen and through to the garden much more easily.

Adding additional storage at one end of the island and sitting at the other end maximises the usable space.

Two feature island lights define the 2 spaces.

A back painted sliding glass door is a space saver solution for access to the new laundry.
