Something I established later on was having a homeschool bag. At first, I thought having a go-to bag for studying outside wasnโ€™t really necessary. But then I realized, if every student has a โ€œschool bag,โ€ then my homeschooler can have one too!

Again, these are just the basics. Nothing too fancy, just the things we actually use when learning time isnโ€™t at home, or when we need to go out in the morning and do lessons midday at a cafรฉ. โ˜•๐Ÿ“š

Some points Iโ€™d like to share:
โ€ข Gadgets are welcome, as long as game time is earned, especially when weโ€™re outside.
โ€ข My 8th gen iPad still works well. Itโ€™s a great alternative to carrying so many books when going out or on vacation. Iโ€™d suggest new homeschooling families get a tablet if they can. Youโ€™ll easily get your ROI since many books are available online already. No need to print!
โ€ข Carry headphones or earphones most of the time. Please donโ€™t play learning videos or any media out loud in public places, it might bother the people around you. Plus, chances are your learner wonโ€™t understand much with all the noise anyway.
โ€ข No gadgets? Make sure to bring books. Children can learn so much just by reading. We usually keep one picture book for entertainment and one novel for narration.
โ€ข Get a big notebook if you can. Small or typical A5 notebooks are okay, but they tend to fill up quickly and can feel cramped once lessons and notes start piling up.
โ€ข Always. Keep. A. Snack! ๐Ÿ˜…

I linked some of the things we bought onlineโ€” check the captions of each photo โค๏ธ

Weโ€™ve been working on our multiplication this summer. From counting by 1s and 2s to singing 3s to the tune of Voltes Vโ€™s theme song (a legacy from my 2nd grade teacher!), weโ€™re now moving on to higher numbers.

Iโ€™ll randomly ask what 7ร—7 is midday, and my homeschooler will answer โ€œ49โ€ immediately. One thing I keep telling him about math is that these numbers will never changeโ€”5ร—5 is always 25 in any situation. We tried memorization for some numbers, but I noticed it became easier for him to answer when he understood how to multiply, with some tips and tricks the internet has blessed us with ๐Ÿ˜…

Itโ€™s also important that our child knows that multiplication is repeated addition. This has made it easier for us to discuss concepts together.

As I try my best to make our learning fun, Iโ€™ve been using UNO cards for our mini games. Today, I got two cards with the same numbers (0โ€“9) and had him pick two cards (face down) and multiply them. Nothing too complicatedโ€”just the thrill of hoping he wonโ€™t pick cards he doesnโ€™t know how to answer yet ๐Ÿ˜…

The wooden blocks serve as a good exercise before we go into the lesson proper, refreshing his memory and helping him visualize multiplication in a hands-on way, making abstract numbers easier to understand and more meaningful. ๐ŸŒฑ

Sharing few of the things I learned as I homeschool for the first time. It's amazing how God also schooled me in this season and how He continues to sustain me (and my impatience) ๐Ÿฅนโค๏ธ

I'm still learning so much, as I'm in the season of transitioning to becoming a โœจCM momโœจ and preparing myself for the 2nd year!

Hope this can help parents who are considering to homeschool their children

As weโ€™ve already decided to go with the CM method next school year, I find that this summer break is the best time to introduce a few new things that align with it.

The slow days during this break can feel a bit emptyโ€”more relaxed mornings, not much on the to-do list, and no pressure of teaching. Maybe this is why some parents choose to homeschool year-round. But since this is our first time, I felt like I needed a season to pause and reevaluate how our year went and what we can improve. Most importantly, Iโ€™m currently taking a pre-enrollment CM training with our provider to help equip me for the upcoming season.

As Iโ€™ve been learning about the CM principles, this is how โ€œeducation is a lifeโ€ has been speaking to me. I realized that a โ€œdaily plannerโ€ doesnโ€™t have to be just for adults, it can be very useful for a child too.

I curated this daily rhythm to test the waters and see if my child can follow a schedule. I drafted one and then asked for his input; whether the schedule felt good enough for him.

I loved the conversation that came out of it.

There were lots of considerations. I had to squeeze in his devotion and reading time in the morning because if we do it at night, he sometimes falls asleep before 8 PM, especially when playtime has been maxed out the whole day ๐Ÿคฃ

His first free play block also includes doing the โ€œDoโ€ part of his devotion. All of this, while I also have my own reading and work to do.

Weโ€™ve only been doing this for 3 daysโ€”yes, 3 daysโ€”but it has already given our days a bit more structure. I get to do most of my chores during his free play time. Iโ€™ve also dedicated his noons to free play, rest, and screen timeโ€”which is very clear to him that itโ€™s โ€œonly if itโ€™s allowedโ€ ๐Ÿคฃ This is posted in my table, fridge, and his play area so we can easily know what's next.

He even seems to enjoy using the term โ€œfree play.โ€ Itโ€™s mostly just playing with his Legos, but Iโ€™ve seen how labeling his activities seems to work for him. I can simply ask him what time it is, and he can easily tell me what heโ€™s supposed to be doing.

Thereโ€™s not much yet in his schedule, but I see this as a good starting point as we slowly move toward fully implementing our new homeschooling method โค๏ธ

I raised my voice more times than Iโ€™d like to admit.
I stressed myself and my child because of expectations that were too high. Not just academically, but even in the small thingsโ€ฆ the โ€œalam mo na dapat โ€™yan.โ€

I had these expectations because I knew I had a smart child. But the weight of that slowly started to drag our homeschool days.

Sometime around September last year, we came across a book. I thought it was cute, so I asked him to take a picture with it. I didnโ€™t even flip through it, I just put it back on the shelf. ๐Ÿ˜…
Days later, I saw that photo again on my camera roll.
And something in me paused.

โ€œOo nga noโ€ฆ Grade 1 might feel so simple and small for me.
But for him, everything is new. Everything can be overwhelming.โ€

That realization hit me.
I felt the need to slow down.
To be more compassionate.
To meet him where he is instead of expecting him to meet me where I think he should be.

I realizedโ€ฆ
I may have learned so much about homeschoolingโ€”
but my child has no reference for what it means to be a first grader.

This is his first time here ๐Ÿฅน

Maybe this is what parenting really looks like;
you can read all the books and prepare all you want, but some lessons you only learn when youโ€™re already living them.

Our first year of homeschooling has been full of trial and error and Iโ€™m not assuming the next year will be easier.
But one thing shifted in me:
Iโ€™m no longer trying to control the learning.
Iโ€™m learning to walk alongside my child.

It feels like Iโ€™m learning again too.

And maybe thatโ€™s what Grade 1 really isโ€”
not just learning how to read or write,
but learning how to begin.

For both of us ๐Ÿ’›

Starting your homeschooling journey can feel both exciting and overwhelming. When I began, having ready-made resources made such a big difference in building confidence and finding our rhythm at home. ๐Ÿค

Iโ€™ll be giving this to a limited number (max of 5 each day) of parents who are just starting out.

If youโ€™re:
โ€ข New to homeschooling
โ€ข Planning to start soon
โ€ข Looking for structured but flexible resources

There's still so much more I find necessary when starting your homeschooling journey, but each family will have different approach and need.
