These are the most common reasons:

❌ Not enough sunlight
➡ Waterlilies need 5–6 hours of direct sun daily

❌ Planted too deep
➡ Incorrect water depth can delay flowering

❌ Too many leaves
➡ Trim old or crowded leaves to help blooms grow

❌ No fertilizer
➡ Waterlilies need regular feeding to bloom well

One of the biggest mistakes I see new growers make is using regular "Potting Mix" or "Lumalo" for their Lotus.

Here’s why that doesn't work:

1️⃣ Floating Mess: Potting mixes usually contain coco peat or perlite. In a water garden, these will float to the top and turn your beautiful pond into a messy soup!

2️⃣ Anchoring: Lotus rhizomes are powerful growers. They need the weight of heavy garden soil (sticky clay is best!) to stay firmly rooted at the bottom.

Where to find the best soil in Davao?
You don't need to buy fancy soil! Look for "sticky" garden soil, the kind that holds its shape when you squeeze it. If you can find rice paddy mud (lapok), even better!

Fill your pot 1/3 with soil, plant the rhizome, then add about 2-3 inches of water on top. Simple!

One of the most common questions I get is: "Why isn't my waterlily blooming?"

The answer is usually hiding in the shadows. ☁️
Unlike many indoor plants that love shade, the waterlily is a sun-worshipper. Because we live in Davao, we have the perfect advantage! Our consistent tropical sun provides the energy the plant needs to push out those big, beautiful buds.

✅ Best Spot: A south-facing balcony, a rooftop, or the middle of your garden.
❌ Avoid: Placing them under big trees or roof eaves where they only get filtered light.

If your waterlily is only growing leaves, try moving it to a sunnier spot and watch the magic happen!

A lot of people think growing Lotus is difficult or requires a massive pond, but here’s a secret: With our amazing Davao sunshine (init pero worth it!) and a little bit of mud, these beauties can thrive right in your own backyard or balcony.

I started Lotus and Plant Davao Grower because I wanted to bring the peace and serenity of the Lotus flower to our local homes. There’s nothing like waking up to a fresh bloom and a cup of coffee. ☕
